Sioux City Explorers News Release

SIOUX CITY, IA -- The rains stayed away but the Sports hit 2 HR and the Explorers spoiled a great pitching performance by Nick Singleton to beat the X's 5-1 on Thursday night at Lewis & Clark Park.

The Sports scored first on a solo HR by Chad Gambill in the 2nd inning but the X's answered with a solo HR by Alex Llanos in the 5th.

With the game tied 1-1, in the 6th, Ron Fenwick led it off with a base hit and went to 2nd on a wild pitch. After Gambill struck out, Adam Hale hit a deep fly ball to center field and Jason Tuttle made a tumbling catch in front of the wall. Tuttle was a little shaken up on the play and Fenwick took advantage, scoring all the way from 2nd base to make it 2-1 Shreveport.

The Sports then broke it open in the 8th on a 3 run HR by Chris Smith, his first professional HR. The Sports hit 3 homers in the series.

The X's had opportunities to rally but came up empty in the clutch hit department. Sioux City stranded 7 men on base, including 2 in the 6th and 2 in the 9th. The X's were 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position on the night.

Singleton, meanwhile, was spectacular, going 8 innings, allowing just the 2 runs while walking 2 and striking out a season high 8. Llanos was 2 for 4 with his first HR of the year and broke a 12 game homerless streak for the Explorers. Luke Hetherington was 2-4 with a double. Tuttle was 1-3 with a stolen base in his first game back from the disabled list.

Sioux City will begin a 3 game series with Sioux Falls at Lewis & Clark Park on Friday night and its Hoak Motors Baseball Cap Night. Cameron Cheek will get the start for the Explorers, Ryan Ford will pitch for the Canaries. Game time is 7:05; for tickets call 277-WINS.
