St. Paul Saints News Release
LINCOLN, NE (June 5, 2008) - St. Paul Saints starter Charlie Ruud will have to wait until his next start to try and tie the record for most career victories by a Saints pitcher, as he tossed a complete game, but lost 4-2 to the Lincoln Saltdogs at Haymarket Park on Thursday night.
Ruud had seen this story before in 2007: toss a complete game against the Saltdogs in Lincoln, but get the loss and on Thursday it was one bad pitch that cost him. With the score tied at one in the sixth Ruud gave up a lead off single to Anthony Contreras and walked Dustin Yount. The Player of the Week from last week Eduardo Rios then delivered a three-run homer to left, his second in as many nights and sixth of the season to make it 4-1. Ruud went 8.0 innings allowing four runs on six hits while walking two and struck out five while losing for the first time this season.
The Saints tacked on a solo homer from Tim Brown in the eighth that was initially ruled foul. Manager George Tsamis came out to argue and the first and homeplate umpire conferred and ruled it was fair. It was Brown's first of the season.
The Saints went quietly in the ninth as Jason Jarvis struck out the side. He is expected to be drafted during the second day of the draft on Friday.
The Saltdogs got on the board first in the second when Mario Delgado singled and advanced to third on a double from Luis Perez. Corey Hanrrington's ground out scored Delgado to give the Saltdogs a 1-0 lead.
The Saints tied it in the third when Ben Thomas doubled, Andrew Bennett was hit by a pitch and Scooter Jordan sacrificed the runners over. Brian Sprout singled home Thomas to tie the game at one.
The Saints finished the nine game roadtrip at 6-3 and are currently 1 ½ games up in the North Division. The Saints return to Midway Stadium for a three game series against the Wichita Wingnuts beginning on Friday at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Alec Shepherd (2-2, 8.88) to the mound while the Wingnuts are TBA. It is Carbon Footprint Night presented by Whole Foods Market St. Paul. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable network (check saintsbaseball.com for the channel in your area) and heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
