DH Adam Hale started the inning with a single to right and was lifted for a pinch runner. Sioux City intentionally walked the next batter to set up a double play and get to Smith who came into the game with an average of just .188. But the Sports' second baseman came through with the long ball to provide breathing room for relievers Matt Clayman and Trey Poland who wrapped up the game with a scoreless ninth inning. Chad Gambill's second inning homer was his fourth of the year. Alex Llanos hit his first of year as well for Sioux City.
