Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (9-10) and Shreveport Sports (5-14) went into 14 innings on Tuesday night to decide the winner, as the Sports outlasted the Canaries, 8-6.
The game was scoreless until the seventh inning when the Sports put three runs on the board. J.P. Schmidt reached on a single and Justin Humphries hit his first homer of the game to put the Sports up 2-0. Tommy Bryant singled up the middle and scored on a groundout by Austin Pride to give Shreveport a 3-0 lead.
The Birds came right back in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own. Orlando Miller reached on an error and advanced to second when Damon Lessler drew a walk. Trevor Lawhorn hit his fifth home run of the year to tie the game, 3-3.
In the top of the ninth inning, Justin Humphries led off with a single, advanced to second on a throwing error by pitcher Kris Regas. Wade Robinson singled, allowing Humphries to score, putting the Sports up 4-3.
The Canaries took the run back in the bottom of the ninth. Lessler led off with a bunt single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cameron Coughlan. Juan Figueroa hit a sacrifice fly to score Lessler, tying the game 4-4, and forcing extra innings.
The Sports put two more runs on the board in the top of the 12th inning. Jack Joffrion singled and Chad Gambill doubled to score Joffrion for a 5-4 lead. Gambill went to third on the throw home and scored moments later on a sacrifice fly by Schmidt. After 11 and a half innings the Sports led, 6-4.
The Canaries came right back in the home half of the inning. Ben Van Iderstine singled through the right side and Matt Imwalle hit his 13th home run of the year to knot the game, 6-6.
The Sports took the lead for good in the top of the 14th inning. Schmidt reached on a fielder's choice and crossed home plate when Humphries hit his 10th homer of the season, giving the Sports the 8-6 win.
Matt Clayman (2-3) earned the win for the Sports pitching 3.2 innings in relief. Aaron Garrison (1-2) suffered the loss allowing four runs on five hits. Aaron Cunningham got his second save of the year.
The Canaries and Sports wrap up the series with a 12:05 game on Wednesday afternoon. Wednesday is "Kids Day Matinee with Mini-Bat Giveaway" presented by South Dakota Tobacco Free Kids Network.
