
Birds Shutout In Series Finale, 5-0

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (9-11) dropped the last game of the series against the Shreveport Sports (6-14) by a score of 5-0 on Wednesday afternoon in front of 3,110 fans. Sports starter Colby Miller (3-9) pitched a complete-game four-hit shutout of the Birds, walking one and striking out seven.
The Sports took the lead in the fourth inning and did not look back. Jack Joffrion and Chad Gambill hit back to back doubles down the right field line, Joffrion scored putting the Sports up 1-0. Gambill advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Tommy Bryant to give the Sports a 2-0 advantage.
The Sports tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh. Justin Humphries reached on an error by Canaries third baseman Matt Imwalle and Tommy Bryant singled through the left side to put two runners on base. Brandon Hudson tried to sacrifice the runners over, but Humphries was thrown out at third on the bunt back to the pitcher. After Wade Robinson singled to load the bases, Deacon Burns drew a walk to bring in Bryant from third, and give the Sports a 3-0 lead. Hudson also scored in the inning, coming around on a fielder's choice. At the end of seven innings, the Sports led 4-0.
J.P. Schmidt led off the eighth inning with a double to left center. Schmidt proceeded to steal third base, his league-leading 34th steal of the season. Schmidt scored on a double play to put Shreveport up by the 5-0 final.
Pat Mahomes (8-3) suffered his second loss in a row throwing seven innings and allowing four runs, two earned, on six hits. Mahomes struck out a season high 12 batters and issued just one walk.
The Birds go on a weekend road trip to St. Joe for a three game series and return home on Monday, July 30 to face off against the Sioux City Explorers. Monday will be "Used Car Giveaway" presented by Nordstrom's Auto.
