Traverse City, MI - The Traverse City Pit Spitters win their second straight, improving to a 20-11 record after a 2-1 win over the Battle Creek Battle Jacks in front of 2,006 fans this evening at Turtle Creek Stadium.
Pit Spitters offense put things together early after back-to-back base hits from Glenn Miller and Colin Summerhill with two outs in the bottom of the first. Evan Orzech made it three straight hits as he ripped a double down the right field line to give the Pit Spitters an early 1-0 lead. The Pit Spitters pitching staff threw six scoreless innings of shutout ball before a walk and a single, followed by a sacrifice bunt leaving runner in scoring position. Spencer Verburg grounded out to third pushing across the tying run to make it 1-1. Devin Hukill walked to lead off the bottom of the seventh followed by a Glenn Miller infield hit setting up runners on first and second. Orzech came through again with another double, this time down the left field line, bringing across the go ahead run to make it 2-1. Things got dicey in the top of the ninth inning, with two outs, Spencer Verburg and Jake Allgeyer drew back-to-back walks, putting the lead run on first. Relief pitcher Aaron Forrest struck out Jt Sokolove to end the game and secured the Pit Spitters second straight win.
The Pit Spitters improve to 20-11 on the season, as the Battle Jacks drop to 9-21. Pit Spitters starting pitcher, Carson Fischer threw five and two thirds' innings, giving up three hits, striking out three, and walking one. Evan Waters came in for relief and threw a third of an inning striking out his only batter. Jared Ure made his second appearance on the season throwing two thirds' innings giving up one hit and one run. Mitch White threw an inning and a third of shutout ball, surrendering one hit and punching out one, as well as earning the win. Aaron Forrest, then came out for the save and threw an inning of scoreless ball, striking out one and walking one, earning the save.
