Guelph Storm News Release
Sometimes things just don't go your way.
That's very much been the story for the Guelph Storm through the first month of the 2015-16 campaign, with it remaining true in the team's visit to Windsor on Saturday afternoon.
Starting off slow, Guelph would drop to a 2-0 deficit in the opening frame, however, the second period had a Storm team taking control, and quickly.
Captain C.J. Garica would pocket Guelph's only goal, bringing his team within one in the opening minute of the second period. That would it be it, though, as a turning point would come minutes later with a fanned-on shot in the offensive zone leaving the Spitfires the chance to extend their lead once again.
Without looking back, Windsor would take the game in a 5-1 result, handing the Storm their 11th loss of the season.
Getting things going right off the hop, Christian Fischer would find the back of the net off a centering pass from Logan Brown, making it 1-0 in favour of the Spitfires just 35 seconds into the game.
Windsor continued to press, forcing Van Schubert to come up with a couple of strong saves, including a big pad save to deny Brown in the opening minutes.
The Spitfires would find the back of the net again, though, with Andrew Burns giving the home team a two-goal lead 7:20 into the first. Following the goal, Justin Nichols would relieve Van Schubert, who made four saves on six shots to start the game.
The Storm wasted no time beginning the middle frame with a quick goal of their own, grabbing the momentum just 54 seconds in with a point shot from Garcia. Tyler Boston would win the face off, giving the Storm captain the chance to wind up and rocket one past Garret Hughson, cutting Windsor's lead in half.
Maintaining the offensive pressure, Givani Smith would have a solid scoring chance of his own shortly after, but Hughson would come up with a high save to deny the Storm the chance to tie things up at two.
Still pressing for the tying marker, a tough break would hurt the Storm with Tyler Hill winding up but fanning on a shot, allowing the Spitfires to turn things around. On the play, Aaron Luchuk would capitalize, restoring Windsor's two-goal lead.
Proving to be the game's turning point, despite outshooting the Spitfires 16-12 in the second period, the Storm would head into the final 20 minutes down three goals with Windsor registering a fourth tally at the 9:29 mark of the middle frame. Making it a 4-1 game, Brown would fire a shot past Nichols off a pass from Bradley Latour.
The third period would feature frustration boiling over, with Fischer pocketing his second of the game to finalize the 5-1 result 5:28 into the frame, prompting a slashing call to Garcia and a matched unsportsmanlike penalty to Windsor's Brown.
With Guelph giving up six man-advantages on the game - four of which came in the final period - none of the Spitfires' tallies would be registered on the power play. The Storm would also be unsuccessful on the man-advantage, going 0/4 in the 5-1 loss.
Nichols would turn aside 30 of 33 shots faced through 52:38 of play, while Windsor's Hughson had 32 saves.
The Storm return to action on Sunday afternoon, visiting the Kitchener Rangers in a Highway Seven rivalry match-up for a 2:00 p.m. puck drop.
