Lindo Leads Attack over Flint
October 31, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Owen Sound Attack wrapped up their mini two-game road trip with a 2-1 win over the Flint Firebirds on Saturday, Oct. 31 thanks to a two point afternoon by forward Jaden Lindo.
Lindo scored once and added an assist while Michael McNiven turned aside 32 of 33 shots as Owen Sound was able to pick up just their 2nd road win of the year.
The Attack dominated the early going of the game, generating plenty of chances and zone time before finally capitalizing on one of their three first period Baywest Nissan Powerplays.
After a confusing sequence of events with just two minutes to go in the opening stanza, Owen Sound found themselves with a two man advantage and didn't let the chance go to waste.
A slick passing play finished with Santino Centorame wiring a shot on Flint's cage that was tipped past Alex Nedeljkovic by Jonah Gadjovich, giving the Attack a 1-0 lead with 1:14 left in the opening period. Jaden Lindo also picked up an assist on the play that sent Owen Sound to the intermission with a crucial 1-0 lead on the road.
Lindo would keep thinks rolling when the puck dropped to start the 2nd period, finding the back of the net with an absolute rocket of a snapshot just 58 seconds into the frame.
Attack rookie Zach Roberts would get the lone assist on the play, recording his first career OHL point on what would be Lindo's 7th goal of the year.
Owen Sound almost made it 3-0 on a shorthanded break by Ethan Szypula just over halfway through the period, but Nedeljkovic would turn it aside to give the Firebirds some life.
Flint used that play as a momentum builder, but Attack netminder Michael McNiven shut the door when called upon through 40 minutes of play, sending Owen Sound to the 3rd period with a two goal advantage.
When the puck dropped to begin the 3rd period, it was clear the Firebirds came out of the intermission with desparation.
The first 10 minutes of the final frame appeared to be played exclusively in the Attack zone, and the home side was eventually rewarded for their persistence.
With 9:25 left, Cullen Mercer found the back of the net on a 2-on-1 break to end McNiven's bid at his 2nd shutout of the year.
However McNiven wouldn't let anything else get behind him, as the Attack were able to weather a late push by the Firebirds and hold on for a 2-1 victory.
McNiven's 32 save afternoon earned him the Mac Taylor Corporation 1st Star of the Game while Jaden Lindo earned 2nd star honours. Flint's Cullen Mercer was named the game's 3rd star.
The Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal finished at 33-26 for Flint on the afternoon.
Your Attack are back in action on Wednesday Nov. 4 when they play host to the Sarnia Sting at 7:00pm.
