There was certainly no lack of spirit in this one.
If it wasn't considered one before, the Guelph Storm and the Windsor Spitfires ignited and solidified a rivalry with Sunday's tilt. With physical play featuring it's fair share of altercations, the Spitfires grabbed their third victory over the Storm this season, potting three goals in the span of 5:34 in the second period en route to a 4-0 final.
Justin Nichols, who was solid all contest, making several big saves early on to keep his team in the thick of things, turned aside 34 of 38 shots in the game.
On the other side, Michael Giugovaz recorded the shutout with 27 saves in the win.
With both teams flying early, both goalies would be tested in the opening frame. Nichols, however, would be the busiest, coming up with a total of 17 stops in comparison to Giugovaz's eight to keep the game scoreless heading into the second period.
The story changed in the middle frame, with the Spitfires starting off a three-goal span at the 10:13 point of the period. Logan Stanley opened the scoring, potting his first Ontario Hockey League marker off the rush.
Just over two minutes later, Cristiano DiGiacinto found the back of the net for his eighth of the season, pulling the Spitfires ahead by two.
To conclude the second's scoring display at the 15:47 mark, Aaron Luchuk finished a three-way passing play to make it a 3-0 deficit for the Storm heading into the third period.
The Storm wouldn't be out of it yet, coming out to play a fast paced final frame, putting forth 12 shots on the period. Unable to capitalize, though, the Spitfires would cement the 4-0 victory at the 10:26 point as Jalen Chatfield would come off the wing to register his second point on the night.
Gueph is back in action on the road next weekend, facing off with the London Knights on Nov. 13, followed up with a visit to the Sarnia Sting on Nov. 14.
GAME NOTES
The Windsor Spitfires now lead the season series 3-0.
