Saginaw Spirit News Release
SARNIA, ONT. - On Sunday night, the Saginaw Spirit travelled to the Sarnia Sports & Entertainment Centre to faceoff against the Sarnia Sting (9-5-2-0, 2nd West Division). The Spirit headed into the game with a 8-7-1-1 record, after defeating the Oshawa Generals Saturday night at The Dow Event Center 4-3. After falling behind early in the third period, the Saginaw Spirit fell to the Sarnia Sting by a score of 3-1.
The Spirit trailed early in the contest, after Sarnia's Jakob Chychrun beat Saginaw's starting goaltender David Ovsjannikov at 8:40 of the first period. Daniel Nikandrov and Zachary Core posted the assists on the play. Ovsjannikov stood tall and kept the Spirit within reach of Sarnia's 1-0 lead throughout the first period, facing a total of 19 shots from their divisional opponent. Saginaw totaled two shots on Sarnia's net minder Justin Fazio in the first period.
Sarnia's 1-0 lead held throughout the second period, but the Sting were beginning to feel the offensive pressure of the Spirit. Saginaw generated multiple scoring opportunities within the middle frame, including two solid scoring attempts from Matthew Kreis and Artem Artemov. The Spirit carried the play in the second period with an 8-3 shot advantage.
Early in the third period, Ryan McGregor tipped in a rebound to give the Sting a 2-0 lead. At 6:08 of the frame, Sarnia's Noah Bushnell was whistled for tripping, giving Saginaw the man advantage. On the ensuing power play, Saginaw broke through as Keaton Middleton fired a shot from the point and beat Fazio on his first goal of the season. Middleton put the Spirit on the board and made it a 2-1 game with help from Marcus Crawford and Connor Brown. Late in the third, Jeff King capped the Sting's scoring and notched a 3-1 victory over the Spirit, with Kevin Spinozzi and Pavel Zacha assisting the play. David Ovsjannikov faced a total of 35 shots from Sarnia, stifling the Sting's offense with some impressive goaltending. The Spirit recorded a final shot count of 22 on Justin Fazio.
