Windsor Spitfires News Release
WINDSOR, ON. The Spitfires battled to a hard fought win on home ice over the visiting Sting. The Sting were looking to extend their win streak to two games while the Spitfires were looking to get back in the win column after a loss in Kitchener.
In the first period, the Sting got on the board first just four minutes into the game. But the Spitfires responded quickly. Just over two minutes later Matt Maggio sniped his 17th on a beauty passing play with Currie and Maillet. Just two and a half minutes later, the Spitfires were on the powerplay when Maggio followed up with his 2nd goal of the night from Cuylle and Zito. With just three minutes left in the period Sarnia tied the game at 2 a piece. However, that tie didn't last long, just a minute and ten seconds to be exact as Christopoulos buried his 5th on the season on his own rebound in front of the net. Henault and Currie drew assists on the goal and that had the Spitfires in front 3-2 after twenty minutes. The shots were 13-6 in favour of Windsor.
In the second period, Captain Will Cuylle had a highlight reel goal and earned OHL play of night honours as he deked out a defenseman before sniping home his 24th on the season. It was the lone goal of the period and Sobolev had the lone assist. After 40 minutrs the Spitfires lead 4-2 and had a narrow lead in shots 17-16.
In the third period, the Spitfires got into a little bit of penalty trouble but were able to kill them all off. With just over a minute remaining Sarnia pulled the goalie but turned over the puck at the Spitfires blue line where Maillet picked it up and fired it into the goal to cap a 5-2 victory.
The Spitfires are back in action tomorrow January 28th when they travel to Guelph for a matchup with the Storm. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm. As for Saturday's game in Erie that is postponed to a date TBD.
