Saginaw Spirit News Release
Saginaw, MI - The Saginaw Spirit (10-7-1-0) return to the ice Thursday night for the second of their third straight at The Dow Event Center in Saginaw, Michigan, facing the Flint Firebirds (9-7-0-1) in the fifth game of 12 in the 2021-22 edition of the Coors Light I-75 Divide Rivalry Series. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
The Spirit are coming off of a home-and-home series sweep of the Windsor Spitfires last Friday and Saturday night with matching 6-5 victories. Friday, the Spirit used a five-goal second period to propel them into a 6-2 lead. The Spits scored three goals in the opening eight minutes to cut the Saginaw lead to one goal. With Windsor continuing their push, the Spirit defense, along with goaltender Andrew Oke, stood tall. The Spirit were outshot 14-2 in the final frame but held on for a 6-5 victory in regulation.
The scene shifted to Saginaw Saturday night, where the Spirit once again got out to big, second period lead with a four-goal middle frame, this time, to take a 5-2 advantage heading into the third. The Spits came back to tie and force overtime. Rookie Calem Mangone scored his first game-winning goal to give the Spirit the extra point with the 6-5 overtime victory.
Flint split a two-game set with the Sarnia, beginning with a road victory Friday night in Sarnia, 6-3. The OHL's reigning Player of the Week Brennan Othmann had three assists and earned first star honors. Overage goalie Luke Cavallin made 34 saves in the win. The next night in Flint, the Firebirds got out to a 2-0 lead, but were unable to hold it. The Sting scored four goals unanswered to take a 4-2 lead. Othmann scored a power play goal in the third, but goaltender Anson Thornton kept the Firebirds off the board to preserve a 4-3 decision.
This is the 44th all-time meeting between the Saginaw Spirit and the Flint Firebirds dating back to the 2015-16 season, when the Plymouth Whalers relocated to Flint. The Spirit are 28-10-4-1 overall and are 14-6-1-0 at The Dow Event Center. The Spirit are 7-3-0-0 in the last 10 games played against Flint in Saginaw.
Tonight, the Spirit will offer $7 upper level tickets to all students and military with proper identification presented by Reder Landscaping. For tickets and more information, log on to www.saginawspirit.com.
