Brantford Bulldogs News Release
HAMILTON, ONTARIO. The Hamilton Bulldogs opened a busy 3-in-4 weekend visiting the Sadlon Arena in Barrie for the first time this season for the team's 3rd meeting of the season with the Barrie Colts.
A tightly fought season series that had seen both previous meetings reach overtime started as a chess match with the Bulldogs pressing the Colts goal. After the Bulldogs killed off an early tripping penalty, they found an offensive groove and opened up the scoring through Nathan Staios. Off a feed from Logan Morrison, Staios rocketed a shot past Mack Guzda in the Colts net at 17:02, giving the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead and Staios his 5th of the season in his 199th career game. With the Bulldogs on the power-play in final half minute of the frame, Beau Jelsma was sprung on a breakaway but Marco Costantini denied the Colts forward with a lightning like pad save, keeping the Bulldogs up 1-0 through 20 minutes.
The Bulldogs opened the second frame with a quick goal, as Nathan Staios rushed the puck into the offensive zone firing a shot that laid dead off the right post to be cleaned up by Mark Duarte marking his 8th goal of the season. The Colts fought back however, on a 3-on-2 Ethan Cardwell would score off an Oskar Olausson rebound at 8:43 cutting the Bulldogs lead in half. Before the period was out the Colts found a tying goal at 13:41 as Tai York recorded his first in the OHL to tie the game 2-2. A late period slew-foot on Jan Mysak by Matthew Sredl would lead to a 5-minute major and a power-play opportunity which carried into the 3rd period.
No offence to be had in the 3rd period as Marco Costantini & Mack Guzda kept their ends of the ice clean through the final 20 minutes with Costantini stopping 10 & Guzda turning aside 11, sending these two teams to overtime for the 3rd time this season.
In overtime the Bulldogs buzzed Guzda's goal with Jan Mysak, George Diaco, Logan Morrison & Avery Hayes all with opportunities. With time ticking down however Beau Jelsma came racing into space in the Bulldogs zone firing a shot on the left wing that snuck through Marco Costantini and giving Barrie the 3-2 victory.
The single point ties the Bulldogs with the North Bay Battalion for first place in the OHL's Eastern Conference.
The Hamilton Bulldogs return to action for a pair of home games this weekend, hosting the North Bay Battalion Friday, December 3rd at 7:00pm and the Erie Otters, for the first time in 787 days, on Sunday, December 5th at 2:00pm.
