State College Spikes News Release

STATEN ISLAND, NY - David Washington delivered his eighth home run of the season, but the State College Spikes saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end as the Staten Island Yankees took a 6-5 decision on Thursday afternoon at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

Washington's solo home run over the right field wall bounced into the Hudson River on a couple of hops in the fifth inning to give the Spikes (29-20) a 5-2 advantage. However, Staten Island (20-29) responded with a two-run double from Eric Jagielo in the fifth inning and a two-run single by Trent Garrison in the sixth to gain the lead for good.

The Spikes had already bounced back from allowing the game's first run to take the lead after the first of Mason Katz's pair of doubles scored a run in the second and Steven Ramos knocked in another run with his third-inning single.

Ramos, the New York-Penn League's batting leader, upped his average to .362 with a 2-for-5 day, Katz, meanwhile, added a single in the seventh to go 3-for-4 on the game.

The nine-game winning streak that was snapped tied a franchise record first set from June 26-July 4, 2007. With the rest of the NYPL playing on Thursday evening, State College fell a game-and-a-half back of Jamestown in the Pinckney Division, and held onto its lead in the Wild Card race by a half-game.

Each team committed four errors on the day, the most for the Spikes or their opponents in a single game this year.

Arturo Reyes (0-2) took the loss in relief after allowing both unearned Yankee runs in the sixth inning. Reyes gave up a total of four hits, one walk and one hit batsman over three innings of work, striking out two. State College starter Juan Bautista went five innings in his homecoming to New York City, where he spent much of his teenage years. Bautista allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits and two walks while recording three strikeouts.

Kelvin Castro (1-2) picked up the win for Staten Island after tossing 2 2/3 innings of one-run relief. Castro gave up three hits and a walk while striking out four. Nick Rumbelow (4) struck out two batters in a perfect ninth inning to earn the save.

Mike Ford helped cut into the Spikes' lead in the fourth inning with a solo home run to right-center field off Bautista as part of a 2-for-4 game. Jagielo drove in a total of three runs and collected a pair of doubles on the day.

The Spikes return to action Friday night when they head across the city to start the second half of their Big Apple swing with a 7 p.m. game against the Brooklyn Cyclones (New York Mets) at MCU Park. State College will send right-hander Kevin Herget (5-0) to the mound, while Brooklyn is set to go with right-hander and NYPL All-Star Game starting pitcher Miller Diaz (4-1).

Following the road trip to New York City, the Spikes will go through the New York-Penn League All-Star break before returning home on Wednesday, August 14 to face the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians) in a two-game series, with both games starting at 7:05 p.m. The 14th will be Ladies Night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, presented by Confer's Jewelers, The Women's Journal and MAJIC 99, with a post-game $1,000 Diamond Dash in which one lucky lady will find a $1,000 diamond from Confer's Jewelers.
