State College Spikes News Release
-SPIKES CONTINUE NYC TRIP IN STATEN ISLAND TODAY The State College Spikes maintain sole possession of first place in the New York-Penn League Wild Card race and now trail Jamestown by just one game in the Pinckney Division as they finish the first half of a six-game road trip through New York City this morning against the Staten Island Yankees at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The Spikes have won a team record-tying nine straight games, and currently have the best team ERA of any club across Minor League Baseball at 2.47. State College is 10-13 all-time against Staten Island, 4-7 on the road.
-LAST GAME: The Spikes built a three-run lead going to the ninth inning and needed it to withstand a furious ninth-inning rally by the Staten Island Yankees and take a 6-5 victory on Wednesday night at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The Spikes tied the franchise's best run ever with their ninth straight win. State College last won nine in a row from June 26-July 4, 2007. Brett Wiley hit his first home run for State College (29-19), a solo shot in the ninth inning, to extend the margin to three. Staten Island would bounce back and load the bases with one out, then score on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and walk to get within a run. However, Jeff Rauh, who allowed the inherited runners to score, would recover to strike out both Eric Jagielo and Yeicok Calderon and nail down the win for the Spikes.
-BAUTISTA GETS BALL FOR SPIKES THIS MORNING: Right-hander Juan Bautista heads to the hill for his eighth start of the year as he gets the ball for State College today against the Yankees. Bautista is making a homecoming to New York City during the road trip, as the Dominican Republic native spent most of his teenage years residing in the Big Apple. Bautista went 5 2/3 innings against Tri-City last time out, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks. The righty is the only Spike to go at least five innings in every outing this season.
-YANKEES TAP PALLADINO FOR START: In a change to the rotation, right-hander David Palladino gets the start for Staten Island in today's game. Palladino is making his tenth appearance and eighth start of the season. Last time out, the Bergen County, NJ native tossed five shutout innings for the win against Williamsport, yielding three hits and a walk while striking out five in the process. Palladino was the Yankees' fifth-round draft choice in 2013 out of Howard College in Texas.
-RECORD FIVE SPIKES NAMED TO NYPL ALL-STAR GAME: Five Spikes, the most in franchise history, were named Sunday to the New York-Penn League All-Star Game. The game will take place at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT on Tuesday, August 13. First baseman David Washington and outfielders Steven Ramos and Ronald Castillo were chosen to start the game, while shortstop Cesar Valera and outfielder Jimmy Bosco were selected as reserves for the NL team.
-SPIKE MARKS: Steven Ramos is once again first in the NYPL in batting with a .361 average...David Washington is now tied with fellow NYPL All-Star Harold Ramirez of Jamestown for the league lead in RBI with 35...The Spikes are 3-1 in day games this season...State College is now 20-0 when leading after eight innings
