Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

BATAVIA, NY (August 7, 2013) - I don't think anyone could have seen it coming. After battling back from three deficits on Wednesday night, the Renegades had tied the Muckdogs at six in the sixth inning. This just seemed like the moment the team had been waiting for, a timely opportunity to win a hard-fought game on the road in an effort to snap a four game losing streak. Yet it wasn't meant to be. Batavia went off on a tear in the inning, and when all was said and done, nine runs were on the scoreboard as the Muckdogs took the first two games of the series.

It all started in the bottom of the second when Batavia scored three runs against Renegades starter Jaime Schultz. However, the Renegades made sure no lead was safe, and came back to tie the score in the third. With one out, Julian Morillo parked his first home run of the year over the left field wall before Ariel Soriano followed with a solo shot of his own to make it 3-2. Johnny Field later tripled with two outs and scored the tying run on a wild pitch by Jarlin Garcia.

After Colton Reavis replaced Schultz with two outs in the bottom of the third, he inherited a baserunner and hit Scott Carcaise with a pitch to put runners at first and second. Chad Wallach's RBI single into left field allowed the Muckdogs to retake the lead at 4-3. Hudson Valley tied it once more in the top of the fourth after a leadoff triple by Goetzman and an RBI single by Harris two batters in. The chance to add more was there after Harris stole second and third, representing the go-ahead run with one out. Garcia responded by striking out Morillo and getting Soriano to ground out to keep the game even at four.

For the second night in a row, J.T. Riddle was a thorn in the Renegades side after smacking a solo home run in the fourth to give Batavia a 5-4 lead. Three straight base hits brought up Austin Dean, whose single to center made it 6-4 but also allowed Harris to throw out Felix Munoz at the plate for the second out and keep the teams separated by a pair of runs.

Trailing 6-4 in the top of the sixth, Hudson Valley took advantage of Muckdogs reliever Robert Ravago thanks to a leadoff single by Ty Young. A wild pitch pushed him to second, and a groundout by Goetzman got Young to third for Harris. His second RBI single made it 6-5, and once again, the 19-year-old was on the move. Upon stealing second base, the catcher Wallach made an errant throw to put the tying run at third base with less than two outs. After John Alexander struck out, Morillo came through again with a game-tying double to right field.

The bottom of the sixth is where it all went terribly wrong. A leadoff single by Romero brought up Munoz, whose groundball to short was misplayed by Darryl George and allowed the runners to be safe. Carlos Lopez's groundball to Young at third got the force out at second, but it put runners at the corners with one out. Three straight singles brought in the pair and made it 8-6. Justin Bohn then lifted a fly ball to center that was misplayed by Harris for an error, allowing two more runs to score and get the Muckdogs into double digits. Yefri Perez later hit a two-run double and a passed ball by catcher Oscar Hernandez tacked on a run and more than doubled the lead to 13-6. Justin Choate finally departed the game for Cory Jordan, who allowed runners at first and second to move up a base on a wild pitch. Carlos Lopez then directed one towards Morillo at second, but the Renegades third error of the inning brought in two more runs. It put the finishing touches on the blowout as neither team would score over the final two and a half innings.

NOTES: Only one of the nine runs in the sixth inning was earned, and eight of them were charged to Choate (1-2)...seven of the nine Muckdogs starters finished with at least two hits...the 15 runs allowed on 22 hits are both new highs for Renegades pitching...Harris and Morillo each finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs...for Morillo, it was his second two-hit and two-RBI game of the season...the loss continues a season worst five-game losing streak, and with Brooklyn's win, puts the Renegades in a tie for second place in the McNamara Divison for the first time all season.

The series concludes Thursday night at 7:05 PM as the Renegades will look to avoid getting swept for the second series in a row. All-Star selection Kevin Brandt (4-3, 2.00 ERA) gets the ball for the 'Gades against Muckdogs righty Trevor Williams (0-1, 3.60 ERA). The Renegades next home game is Thursday, August 15 against the Brooklyn Cyclones at 7:05 PM.
