Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Jamestown starter Chad Kuhl and two relievers combined on a two-hit shutout as the Jammers shutout the Vermont Lake Monsters 4-0 in New York-Penn League action on Thursday night at historic Centennial Field.
Kuhl (2-3) retired 13 of the first 14 batters he faced (hit Ryon Healy with two outs in first inning) before Michael Soto doubled to rightfield with one out in the top of the fifth. Kuhl left after five innings, allowing just the one hit with three strikeouts for his second win of the season. Reliever Justin Topa also struckout three in three scoreless innings and gave up one hit, a two-out single to Ryan Gorton in the bottom of the eighth before Henry Hirsch tossed a 1-2-3 ninth.ÃâÃÂ
The Jammers scored the only run they would need in the top of the first on a Jeff Roy one-out bunt single, stolen base and two-out Dave Valesente RBI single. Jamestown added another run in the fifth on a Jimmy Rider RBI double, then added two more runs in the sixth on a Michael Fransoco two-run bases loaded single to leftfield.
All four of the Jammer runs were charged to Lake Monsters starter Brent Powers (4-2), who allowed four earned runs on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts over five innings. Powers'ÃâàÃâànext scheduled start will be for the American League affiliates in Tuesday's New York-Penn League All-Star Game at Connecticut. Relievers Junior Mendez and Tyler Johnson both had two strikeouts in two scoreless innings.ÃâÃÂ
The victory gave Jamestown two wins in the three-game series against Vermont, marking the first home series loss out of nine for the Lake Monsters this season. Vermont had won two-of-three in each of its first six three-game series at Centennial, while both sweeping one and splitting one two-game series. The shutout was also the fifth of the season against Vermont and the first one not a 1-0 loss.
The Lake Monsters continue the homestand with a three-game series against the Williamsport Crosscutters over the weekend, beginning on Friday night at 7:05 pm. and continuing with single games on Saturday at 6:05 pm and Sunday at 5:05 pm.
