State College Spikes News Release

-SPIKES START NYC JAUNT IN STATEN ISLAND TONIGHT: The State College Spikes are in sole possession of first place in the New York-Penn League Wild Card race and look to cut into Jamestown's two-game lead in the Pinckney Division tonight as they begin a six-game road trip through New York City with a matchup against the Staten Island Yankees at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The Spikes have won seven straight games and nine of their last ten, and currently have the best team ERA of any club across Minor League Baseball at 2.43 after a perfect 6-0 homestand. State College is 8-13 all-time against Staten Island, 2-7 on the road.

-LAST GAME: The Spikes continued their winning ways on Sunday night, notching their seventh straight victory as they defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters, 3-1, to complete a perfect 6-0 homestand at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College has won nine games in a row at home. The Spikes are now 19-6 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park this season, including a 16-2 mark in their last 18 home contests. Steven Ramos collected a pair of hits and a walk. Mason Katz helped lead the State College offense with a pair of doubles, and scored an insurance run in the eighth inning to give the Spikes their first lead of more than one run in the three-game series against Vermont. Jhonny Polanco earned his second win of the homestand in relief.

-REED GETS THE START FOR THE SPIKES TONIGHT: Left-hander Jimmy Reed heads to the hill for his eighth pro appearance and fifth start as he gets the ball for State College tonight against the Yankees. Reed is coming off a strong five-inning performance in a victory over Tri-City last time out. The Maryland product and Cardinals sixth-round draft choice in 2013 allowed a run on five hits and a walk while striking out three to beat the ValleyCats. Reed has gone a total of 11 innings in his last two starts, yielding just two runs during that span.

-YANKEES TAP KENDRICK FOR START IN OPENER: Left-hander Conner Kendrick gets the ball for Staten Island in tonight's game. Kendrick was taken by the Yankees in the ninth round of the 2013 draft out of Auburn University, where he went 5-3 this past spring with a 2.13 ERA in 80 1/3 innings and posted a team-high 75 strikeouts. As a pro, Kendrick has been a highlight of the rotation since shifting there in mid-July. The southpaw has given up just one earned run in 13 innings of work as a starter after posting a 9.64 ERA in relief.

-RECORD FIVE SPIKES NAMED TO NYPL ALL-STAR GAME: Five Spikes, the most in franchise history, were named Sunday to the New York-Penn League All-Star Game. The game will take place at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT on Tuesday, August 13. First baseman David Washington and outfielders Steven Ramos and Ronald Castillo were chosen to start the game, while shortstop Cesar Valera and outfielder Jimmy Bosco were selected as reserves for the NL team.

-SPIKE MARKS: The Spikes' current seven-game win streak is their longest of the season...State College now has four walk-off wins on the year, but the 2006 edition of the club set the record with eight...Steven Ramos is once again first in the NYPL in batting with a .360 average...David Washington is second in the NYPL with 33 RBI...Kevin Herget's five wins are tied for the most in the NYPL...Jimmy Bosco is now 5th in slugging (.487)
