Finally an off day!

Yesterday, the Aberdeen IronBirds enjoyed their first true off day of the season. The previous off day (July 16th) the team used as a travel day in advance of their series at Centennial Field against the Vermont Lake Monsters. The IronBirds begin their final six game road trip of the season tonight when they travel to Auburn to take on the Doubledays. The Doubledays are an affiliate of the Washington Nationals.

Know Your Opponent

The Doubledays enter play today with the worst record in the league at 16-31. However, they are coming off of a three game sweep of the Hudson Valley Renegades in Dutchess Stadium. The three game sweep marks the first time that Auburn has won consecutive games all season. They are tied for the eighth best batting average in the league with the Brooklyn Cyclones at .237. They own the worst ERA in the New York-Penn League at 4.61.

Prime Opportunity for the IronBirds

The IronBirds are in position to make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. They sit just a half game back of the Hudson Valley Renegades for first place in the McNamara Division and are 3.5 games back of the Wild Card lead currently being held by the State College Spikes. The IronBirds have three against Auburn, which sits in last place in the Pinckney Division, and then three against the Batavia Muckdogs, who share an identical 23-22 record with the IronBirds entering play today.

The IronBirds will be well represented at the New York-Penn League All Star Game a week from tonight in Connecticut. Trey Mancini, Austin Wynns, and Mike Yastrzemski were all named as starters for the American League team, while Jimmy Yacabonis will pitch out of the bullpen.
