Spikes Smash Four Homers to Beat Yankees, 7-3, for Eighth Straight Win

STATEN ISLAND, NY - The State College Spikes plated all of their runs via homer on Wednesday night, with Luke Voit, Carson Kelly, Steven Ramos and David Washington all going deep to tie a club record and defeat the Staten Island Yankees, 7-3, at Richmond County Bank Ballpark and give the Spikes their eighth consecutive victory.

The four home runs matched the Spikes' (28-19) single-game record, set on August 7, 2007 against Lowell and matched on August 24, 2008 at Mahoning Valley.

Voit opened the scoring with his second home run of the season, a solo shot to left field, in the third inning. After Staten Island (19-28) put up three runs in the fifth to take the lead, Kelly gave it back to State College (28-19) with a three-run clout to center field to make it a 4-3 game.

In the eighth inning, Ramos led off with his first long ball of the season as he swatted the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall to extend the lead to 5-3. Washington capped it all off by clubbing a pitch off of the scoreboard in left-center field to score two runs and run his homer total to seven. The Spikes' first baseman also has 35 RBI on the season, good enough to put him back in first place in the New York-Penn League.

State College remains two games back of Jamestown in the NYPL's Pinckney Division, and still holds a one-game lead over Lowell and Tri-City in the league's Wild Card race. The Spikes have won nine of their last ten games, including back-to-back road wins after going 7-13 away from home to start the year.

Spikes reliever Jacob Booden (3-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Booden gave up one hit and one walk while striking out two in support of starter Jimmy Reed. Reed left the game in the fifth inning after yielding the tying run, and was tagged for all three Yankee runs, two of them earned, over four-plus innings.

Mitch Harris and Jeff Rauh teamed for three more shutout frames to slam the door on Staten Island.

Dillon McNamara (3-3) took the loss in relief for the Yankees after giving up Kelly's three-run shot in the seventh, though only two runs were earned. McNamara gave up a total of two hits and three walks while striking out one over two innings of work.

Derek Toadvine and Jose Rosario each collected multiple hits for Staten Island.

Wednesday, the Spikes and Yankees tangle once again at Richmond County Bank Ballpark in a 7 p.m. matchup. State College right-hander Andrew Pierce (0-2) gets the start coming off his first career save. Staten Island will go to NYPL All-Star right-hander Rookie Davis (2-2) for the mound assignment.

Following the road trip to Staten Island and Brooklyn, the Spikes will go thorugh the New York-Penn League All-Star break before returning home on Wednesday, August 14 to face the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians) in a two-game series, with both games starting at 7:05 p.m. The 14th will be Ladies Night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, presented by The Women's Journal, Confer's Jewlers and MAJIC 99, with a post-game $1,000 Diamond Dash in which one lucky lady will find a $1,000 diamond from Confer's Jewlers.

Fans can then bring their favorite four-legged friends to the park on Thursday, August 15 as the Spikes face the Scrappers during Bark in the Park II, presented by Metzger Animal Hospital, NEWSRADIO 103 and theCentre Daily Times. Fans will be able to watch the game with their canine pal in the Outfield Bleachers as well as on the concourse. Fans are asked to bring one dog per person, and all dogs must be leashed or crated. Owners will also be asked to provide their dog's vaccination records and sign a liability waiver.
