IronBirds Ride Wild Win Into First Place

August 6, 2013 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Auburn, NY- The Aberdeen IronBirds battled the Auburn Doubledays back and forth for nine innings tonight, and they still had to play extras. In the end, a Sam Kimmel RBI triple in the top of the tenth was enough for Aberdeen to secure a win and, coupled with a Hudson Valley loss, take over first place of the McNamara Division at 24-22.

The IronBirds got things started in the top of the second inning. After Manny Hernandez led off with an infield single, he advanced to second on a Kimmel ground out. Mike Yastrzemski launched his third home run of the season over the right field wall and it gave the IronBirds a 2-0 lead.

The Doubledays would answer, and quickly. Auburn scored three runs in the bottom of the frame, taking a 3-2 lead. Brian Lippincott hit an RBI double and that was followed by a Jimmy Yezzo two RBI double, all in the bottom of the third.

Aberdeen would retake the lead in the fifth. With two outs, Trey Mancini singled. After a Conor Bierfeldt walk, Jeff Kemp hit an RBI single, scoring Mancini. Austin Wynns, the next batter, hit a two run double, and it was 5-3 Aberdeen heading to the bottom of the fifth.

Auburn tied it in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs with two outs. Yezzo hit a double, followed by a Matt Foat single. Cody Gunter and Kyle Attl then hit consecutive RBI singles, and the game was tied at five apiece.

The Doubledays took the lead again in the sixth without getting a hit. Isaac Ballou walked, and then reached third on an errant pickoff attempt by Austin Urban. Lippincott then hit a sacrifice fly to left, deep enough to score Ballou and it was 6-5 Auburn.

Manny Hernandez tied it up in the top of the eighth. Two batters after Hector Veloz singled, Hernandez singled to left, scoring Veloz easily. On the throw home, Hernandez tried to get to second, but was tagged out. The run scored before the out and the game was knotted at six.

Aberdeen scored three in the top of the ninth. Kimmel and Yastrzemski singled, and Bierfeldt reached on an error. That loaded the bases for Kemp. The IronBirds' second baseman then placed a bases clearing doubled into deep right center field, and the IronBirds led 9-6 heading to the last of the ninth.

Auburn was able to force extras, however, by scoring three runs on three hits and a walk in the bottom of the ninth.

In the tenth, Hernandez came up large again, hitting a one out double into the left field corner.

Kimmel then laced an RBI triple to right field, scoring Hernandez easily.

All told, Aberdeen pounded out 17 hits, scoring ten runs. Kemp ended up with four RBIs, and Hernandez had a 4-5 night, with two runs scored, a double, and an RBI.

Donnie Hart, who had come on in the ninth, stayed on in the tenth and stranded the tying run at third to collect the win. He improves to 2-0.

Jake Joyce takes the loss for the Doubledays, who fall to 16-32.

Aberdeen will be in first place entering play tomorrow, and will send RHP Sebastian Vader to the hill tomorrow looking for the series win. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
