Lowell Spinners News Release

NILES, OH - The Lowell Spinners twice came from behind, taking a lead on a bases loaded walk by Danny Bethea in the seventh inning as the team started a six-game road-trip with a win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 4-3, Tuesday night at Eastwood Field.

Mahoning Valley (20-27) became the first team to solve back-to-back New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week Jamie Callahan, with a one-out single by Josh McAdams in the second inning the first hit allowed by Callahan in over seven innings of work.

The Scrappers went one step further in the third inning, getting to Callahan for a run. A leadoff double by Cody Ferrell started the inning and a Joel Mejia single advanced Ferrell to third. Callahan induced a double play as the Spinners traded a run for the out, give Mahoning Valley a 1-0 lead.

Lowell (27-20) pulled even in the top half of the fourth inning. Forrestt Allday led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second when Kenny Mathews pickoff attempt skipped past the bag at first. Tzu-Wei Lin followed with an RBI single to center, evening the score at one.

The Scrappers retook the lead in the fifth on a two-run single by Claudio Bautista before Daniel McGrath came out of the pen to strike out James Roberts and end the inning with the Spinners down, 3-1.

The Spinners would once again respond immediately, pulling even in the top half of the sixth inning. Again, Allday worked a leadoff walk and Lin drove him home with a double to the right-centerfield gap. After Kevin Mager struck out, Bethea doubled to right, scoring Lin to knot the score at three.

After an infield single from Nick Moore, another Allday walk and a walk to Mager, Bethea worked a bases loaded walk to score Moore and give the Spinners a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish.

Callahan went the first 4.2 innings, allowing all three Scrappers runs on five hits and two walks, striking out one. After a full turn off, McGrath was sensational for the Spinners, retiring all seven batters he faced, striking out four. Brayan Villarreal, making his Red Sox organizational debut on rehab from Pawtucket, pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Joe Gunkel picked up his fourth save by striking out the side in the ninth, extending his scoreless innings streak to 11.1 innings since joining the Spinners.

The top of the order provided all the offense for the Spinners, as Allday walked three times and scored two runs from the leadoff position. Bethea had two doubles and two RBI, his fifth straight game with an RBI and his third multi-hit game in his last four games. Lin also had two hits, doubling and driving in one, while Moore's infield single represented the other Spinners hit.

The two teams meet again Wednesday night when Teddy Stankiewicz (0-0, 1.80) gets the ball for a 7pm first pitch.
