Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Jamestown scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the 11th inning to hand the Vermont Lake Monsters their fifth straight loss with a 5-3 Jammers victory in New York-Penn League action Tuesday night at historic Centennial Field.ÃâÃÂ
With one out and runners on first and second in 11th, third baseman Luis Baez throw to second base got past second baseman Melvin Mercedes allowing Harold Ramirez to score the tie-breaking run. Erich Weiss followed with a sacrifice fly to right giving the Jammers a 5-3 lead. Brett McKinney came on to strikeout the side in the bottom of the 11th for his fifth save of the season.ÃâÃÂ
Ramirez had given Jamestown a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth with a solo homer down the left-field line, but the Lake Monsters were able to tie the game in the bottom of the inning on a one-out Baez RBI single scoring Jaycob Brugman and advancing pinch runner Chris Wolfe to third. The Lake Monsters tried to win the game with a suicide squeeze, but Josh Miller's bunt went just in front of the plate and catcher Jin-De Jhang was able to tag out Wolfe at home.
Ryon Healy was 2-for-5 for Vermont with a double and a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning that gave the Lake Monsters a 2-0 lead. The Jammers tied the game in the top of the fifth with another pair of unearned runs on a two-run single from Adam Frazier after a Mercedes two-out fielding error prolonged the inning.ÃâÃÂ
With just one of the five Jamestown runs earned, Vermont pitchers continued to lower their ERA down to a season best 2.78 as the Lake Monsters held the top offensive team in the league by average to just eight hits with 15 strikeouts over the 11 innings. Trivino had six strikeouts over five innings, while reliever Sam Bragg had five strikeouts over two innings.
Brugman and Mercedes each had two hits for Vermont (23-26), which fell three games under .500 for the first time since 15-18 on July 21st. It was also the Lake Monsters seventh straight loss by either one or two runs (Vermont now 10-16 in games decided by one or two runs).
The Lake Monsters will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday as they again host Jamestown starting at 7:05 pm at historic Centennial Field on Northeast Delta Dental Night at the Ballpark.
