Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

BATAVIA, NY (August 6, 2013) - No lead is ever safe, and nobody knows that better than Renegades manager Michael Johns. On a night when it seemed like his team had temporarily shaken off the woes that had plagued them in a sweep at the hands of Auburn, it was Batavia who stormed back on Tuesday night. Both teams scored three runs in the fifth inning, but the Muckdogs walked away winners after scoring in the ninth. The loss matched a season-worst four game losing streak for the 'Gades, who once again sit just a game above .500.

Hudson Valley immediately rattled the cage of Muckdogs starter Domingo German, putting runners in scoring position in three of the first four innings. In the second, Granden Goetzman stole third base with two outs but the red hot James Harris grounded out to short to retire the side. Darryl George and Johnny Field later singled with two outs in the top of the third, but Oscar Hernandez grounded into a force out at second to keep the game scoreless.

In the home fourth, the Muckdogs finally went after the lefthander Ben Griset thanks to a pair of one out singles by Carlos Lopez and Austin Dean. Following a strikeout of Javier Lopez, Griset got Felix Castillo to end the inning with a groundout that sent the game to the action-packed fifth inning.

Harris led off and reached on an error by first baseman Felix Munoz. With John Alexander at the plate, German balked Harris to second and soon surrendered an RBI single to give Hudson Valley a 1-0 lead. Alexander had advanced to second on a throw to the plate to try and get Harris, and quickly moved to third after a groundout by Soriano. George then hit his second triple to center field in less than a week to make it 2-0. Despite a 2-for-2 start at the plate, Field went down on strikes for the second out and with Hernandez at the plate, German's wild pitch scored George to make it 3-0.

A three run lead was not enough for Griset, who immediately retired the first two batters in the bottom of the fifth. But four straight singles and a Goetzman error in left field brought in three runs to tie the score, and the game went to the sixth with both starters' nights finished. The ninth inning featured an Omar Narvaez single with one out, but Harris struck out and Narvaez was caught stealing at second base to give the Muckdogs a chance to win it before extras.

Following three dominant innings by Derek Loera, Batavia finally capitalized with a runner at first and two outs. Luis Ortiz guided a shot towards first baseman John Alexander, who could not make the play and kept the inning going with runners at first and second. After Yefri Perez was summoned from the bench to pinch-run at second base, he came in to score the winning run after an RBI single from J.T. Riddle.

NOTES: The loss, coupled with Aberdeen's win, puts the IronBirds in first place in the McNamara Division by half a game...Griset struck out five for the second straight game and hasn't allowed a walk in his last three starts spanning 17 innings pitched...the Renegades struck out 14 times, the third time they've reached that high mark this season...George and Field each finished 2-for-4...the run charged to Loera (0-1) was unearned because of the error in the ninth.

The series continues Wednesday night at 7:05 PM as the Renegades look to avoid the .500 mark for the first time this season. Jaime Schultz (1-1, 2.55 ERA) will try and snap the losing skid against Batavia's southpaw Jarlin Garcia (1-1, 3.63 ERA). The Renegades next home game is Thursday, August 15 against the Brooklyn Cyclones at 7:05 PM.
