State College Spikes News Release

-SPIKES FACE JAMMERS IN EARLY PINCKNEY SHOWDOWN: The State College Spikes take on the team that is one game ahead of them on top of the Pinckney Division standings through the first seven days of the season tonight as the Jamestown Jammers head into Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for the second game of a three-game series. The visit is the first by the Jammers since becoming the Pittsburgh Pirates' affiliate. State College is 31-40 all-time against Jamestown, with a 15-20 record in games at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. All previous matchups against the Jammers came when Jamestown was affiliated with the Miami Marlins.

-LAST NIGHT: Bruce Caldwell hit his first home run with the State College Spikes to bring them within a run late in the game, but the Jamestown Jammers held on to take a 6-5 victory in a back-and-forth affair at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Sunday night. Caldwell's long ball was a solo shot in the seventh inning, and gave the Spikes hope heading into the final two frames. However, the Jammers nailed down the win as a 2012 Spike, Kevin Kleis, recorded the final six outs in a row for the save. Jimmy Bosco had multiple hits, and Cesar Valera reached base twice to go with his two RBI.

-PERRY GETS BALL FOR SECOND CAREER START: Right-hander Chris Perry, the 17th-round draft choice of the Cardinals in 2012, makes his second career pro start as he starts for the State College tonight. Tuesday night in Williamsport, Perry allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out three over four innings in a no-decision. The 22-year-old was selected out of Methodist College in North Carolina last year, but did not see any action during the summer due to a lower back injury. Perry went 6-2 with a 2.14 ERA and recorded a team-high 132 strikeouts over 15 appearances (14 starts) at Methodist in 2012.

-NEVERAUSKAS HEADS TO HILL FOR JAMMERS: Right-hander Dovydas Neverauskas gets the ball for Jamestown tonight in game two of the three-game series. Neverauskas started the season by giving up just one run on four hits and a hit batsman while stirking out three over five innings of work against Mahoning Valley on Wednesday. The Lithuanian was a Spike at the end of last year, becoming the first player from his native land to pitch for State College. Ironically, Neverauskas made his only appearance as a Spike against the Jammers last year in Jamestown, tossing four one-run innings on September 1.

-HEY, I KNOW YOU: Jammers manager Dave Turgeon returns to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for this series after skippering the Spikes in 2012. Jamestown pitching coach Mike Steele also comes back to State College after serving as Spikes pitching coach from 2009-2010. Plus, nine players listed on the 2013 Jammers roster (Lance Breedlove, Kevin Kleis, Jared Lakind, Dovydas Neverauskas, Isaac Sanchez, Francisco Aponte, Yhonathan Barrios, Jodaneli Carvajal, Jimmy Rider and Jesus Vasquez) saw action for the Spikes in 2012.

-SPIKE MARKS: Ronald Castillo (.400) and Cesar Valera (.385) are 4-5 in the NYPL in batting average...Castillo's 12 hits are tied for the NYPL lead...Bosco's seven runs scored are tied for third...The Jammers bunted five times last night for three sacrifices and two base hits...The Spikes' .294 team average leads the league
