Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

BROOKLYN, NY (June 23, 2013) - All fairytales must come to an end. For the Hudson Valley Renegades, their perfect 6-0 start to the season was washed away in one fell swoop on what became a rainy Sunday night on Coney Island. On a night the offense stumbled with a season-low three runs and seven hits, they were still able to manage a 3-1 lead until the eighth inning. The Cyclones would score once in the eighth and again in the ninth to tie the game before winning 4-3 in the bottom of the 13th, just shy of the four hour mark. For the first time this season, the Renegades looked human.

It all started smoothly in the top of the first off Cyclones lefty starter Danilo Alvarez. An Ariel Soriano double down the left field line opened the door to an Oscar Hernandez RBI single up the middle to quickly make it 1-0 and give the 'Gades the early lead. Chris Kirsch was coming off a win following six impressive innings during his season debut against Aberdeen on Tuesday night. He would let Brooklyn tie the game in the bottom of the third on a Gavin Cecchini RBI single. With Cyclones at first and second, Kirsch would balk the runners to second and third. But two big strikeouts allowed him to send the game to the fourth still tied at one.

The scoring picked up again in the Renegades sixth after three straight one-out doubles by Soriano, Jonathan Quiñonez, and Hernandez plated up two more runs to increase the lead to 3-1. Kirsch was in line for his second win after going five and handed the ball to Jaime Schultz, who kept the Cyclones off the scoreboard in the sixth and seventh.

But the momentum flipped in the eighth inning with Andrew Hanse in the game to try and close things out. The right-hander hadn't allowed a run in his first four innings out of the bullpen, making easy work of both the IronBirds and Yankees during the six-game winning streak. Three batters into the frame, and Brooklyn added a run to cut the deficit to 3-2 after Jared King singled home Cecchini, who had started the inning with a double.

In the ninth, the Cyclones were down to their final out with James Roche representing the tying run at second base after a leadoff single and a sac bunt. Hanse was ahead in the count 0-1 before Patrick Biondi lined a single into right. James Harris came up throwing to the plate, but it wasn't in time and the score was tied at three. Later, and with a steady rain falling throughout extra innings, Brooklyn would win it in the bottom of the 13th on Roche's RBI single to left that Granden Goetzman almost caught on a diving leap.

NOTES: Hudson Valley did not have a base hit after Harris led off the seventh with a single...the 14 strikeouts were the most by the Renegades so far this season, with eight of them coming in the final five innings...the Renegades are hitting .301 against right-handed pitching but just .102 against lefties...Hernandez had his second three-hit game in a row.

The Renegades return home to Dutchess Stadium on Monday night to try and even the series with the Cyclones. John Farrell takes on Brooklyn's Rob Gsellman with first pitch coming at 7:05 PM. Great seats are still available for the final two games of the Brooklyn series on Monday and Tuesday. Call 845-838-0094 or visit www.hvrenegades.com to purchase your tickets now.
