Lowell Spinners News Release

BURLINGTON, VT - Tzu-Wei Lin singled in a run in the third inning and Mario Alcantara dazzled in his second start of the season as the Lowell Spinners won their fourth game of the season, 1-0, over the Vermont Lake Monsters Monday night in a rain-shortened six inning affair.

Lowell (4-3) plated the only run of the game in the third inning by playing a little small ball. Nick Moore and Williams Jerez drew back-to-back walks to open the frame and Cleuluis Rondon advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt in front of the plate. Lin then singled deep into the hole at second base to score Moore, but the Spinners could do no more, leaving two runners in scoring position to end the inning, leading, 1-0.

Alcantara (2-0, 0.00) has begun the season white-hot, as he tossed five scoreless innings of two-hit ball. He walked two and struck out four. Through two starts this season, Alcantara hasn't allowed a run in 10 innings. Taylor Grover, a 2013 10th round pick of the Red Sox, made his professional debut and threw a scoreless sixth inning with two strikeouts for his first professional save.

Starting pitching has delivered Lowell its four wins this season, as Alcantara, Sergio Gomez, Jamie Callahan, Simon Mercedes, and Ty Buttrey have combined for a 1.45 ERA through the first week, and the overall team ERA sits at a miniscule 1.94.

The Spinners had just two hits in the game, taking advantage of four Vermont walks. Lin's run-scoring infield single in the third and a Jake Romanski single in the fourth, his first as a professional, stood as the team's only hits.

The Spinners look to take the rubber game of this three-game set tomorrow evening as Mercedes (0-0, 0.00) makes his second start of the season, looking for his first victory. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
