State College Spikes News Release

JAMESTOWN, NY - Danny Diekroeger extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a three-hit night, and the State College Spikes lowered their magic number for a New York-Penn League Pinckney Division crown to one with an 8-0 victory over the Jamestown Jammers on Friday night at Russell Diethrick Park.

With the win and losses by Batavia and Williamsport on Friday night, the Spikes (40-26) can now capture their second consecutive division title and a berth in the NYPL playoffs by defeating the Jammers (30-34) on Saturday night.

Diekroeger helped lead a State College offensive attack that broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning. The Stanford product delivered an RBI triple in the fifth inning, then singled in the sixth and scored to keep the frame going.

Chase Raffield and Jake Stone both provided run-scoring doubles for the Spikes in the sixth, while Jhohan Acevedo delivered a single to score the first run of the inning, then stole two bases before scoring one of his two runs.

The Spikes' offensive efforts bolstered another strong performance from the State College pitching staff, which notched its fifth combined shutout of the year. Daniel Poncedeleon (2-3) began the proceedings and struck out a career-high eight batters over five innings of work, and yielded four hits and two walks as part of his first professional win in a starting role. Poncedeleon also escaped a jam in the fourth with runners on second and third and no outs by striking out the next three batters.

Nick Lomascolo then struck out three batters over two innings of work, followed by a perfect eighth inning from Joe Scanio in which he recorded three whiffs. Josh Lucas completed the shutout with a one-hit ninth inning. In total, Spikes pitchers recorded 15 strikeouts on the night, tied for the most in a single game this year.

Robelys Reyes, Nick Thompson and Darren Seferina each produced multiple hits for the Spikes as well, with Reyes and Seferina also helping State College turn three double plays.

Jamestown starter Alex McRae (3-5) took the loss after being charged with five runs, four of them earned, on ten hits and a walk while striking out five over 5 1/3 innings.

Michael Suchy was the only Jammer with multiple hits in the game.

Saturday's potential division-clinching matchup at Russell Diethrick Park will feature NYPL All-Star Will Anderson (5-2) on the mound for the Spikes. The right-hander is fifth in the league with a 2.31 ERA. Jamestown will go with right-hander Austin Coley (0-1).

The Spikes will then complete their three-game series against the Jammers with a 4:05 p.m. matchup on Sunday before heading to Mahoning Valley on Monday and Tuesday to finish a five-game road series.

Following the road trip, the Spikes will begin a four-game homestand, the last of the 2014 regular season, on Wednesday, August 27. The homestand will run until Saturday, August 30, and include the Coach Franklin Bobblehead Giveaway to the first 1,000 fans on Thursday, August 28, presented by The Nittany Lion Inn & The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel and ESPN Radio 1450, as well as a pair of FIREWORKS shows.
