Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Jose Brizuela had a two-run single and Max Kuhn an RBI single in the third inning, while Jerad Grundy and a trio of relievers held Staten Island to one run as Vermont won its third straight game with a 3-1 New York-Penn League victory over the Yankees on Friday night at historic Centennial Field.
Ben McQuown had a one-out single to center in the third before stealing both second and third bases, while Dayton Alexander walked and stole second as J.P. Sportman struckout for the second out of the inning. Brizuela followed with the two-run single to rightfield and Kuhn with an RBI single to right scoring Brizuela for a 3-0 lead. The Lake Monsters had four hits in the first three innings, Including a Trent Gilbert single in the second inning, but Vermont was held hitless over the final innings by Yankee relievers Ethan Carnes and Matt Wotherspoon.
But the three runs were enough for the Lake Monsters as Grundy (4-6) allowed one run on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts over six innings to his third win in his last four starts. The Yankees scored their only run in the fourth as Connor Spencer led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Isaias Tejeda RBI groundout cutting the Vermont lead to 3-1.
Dominique Vattuone came on in relief in the seventh for the Lake Monsters and struckout two while giving up a one-out single in a scoreless inning, while Fernand Cruzado struckout the side in the eighth inning on just 14 pitches. Koby Gauna then worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his 10th save in 10 save opportunities. Gauna is just the sixth pitcher in Vermont's 21-year history to record 10 or more saves in a season.
The Lake Monsters have now won each of their last three games by two runs, including 3-1 and 4-2 victories at Tri-City, while Vermont (29-37) has not allowed more than two runs in any of its last 11 victories dating back to a 6-5 win over Batavia on July 30th. The Lake Monsters are also 12-7 in the month of August after going just 10-19 during July.
Vermont and Staten Island will play the second of the three-game series on Saturday at Centennial beginning at 6:05 pm. The first 750 kids will receive a free Lake Monsters baseball courtesy of Blue Cross/Blue Shield and their will be the final fireworks show of the season after the game.
