Lowell Spinners News Release
ABERDEEN, MD. - After a 5am bus call time the Lowell Spinners certainly showed they were a bit tired, as the Aberdeen Ironbirds jumped out to a 5-0 lead en route to a 5-2 win Friday night over the Spinners at Ripken Stadium.
After being stymied by Kevin McAvoy for the first three innings, Aberdeen (22-43) broke through against Williams Jerez in the fourth inning. Though there were no hard hit balls, a lead-off walk and wild pitch got Jerez into an early jam. Jamill Moquete delivered an RBI double to break the scoreless tie and give the Ironbirds a 1-0 lead. With one out, a chopper back to Jerez turned into a nightmare, as Jerez's throw sailed wide of Cisco Tellez at first, allowing two runners to score and Aberdeen to take a 3-0 lead before Jerez escaped the inning.
The Ironbirds would extend their lead in the fifth, taking advantage of another Spinners miscue. With Edwar Garcia on in relief, a one-out error by Mauricio Dubon got the Ironbirds going. Steve Wilkerson followed with an RBI triple and Austin Anderson followed with an RBI double to extend the lead to 5-0.
Lowell (32-33) broke through in the bottom half of the sixth inning. After Dubon led off the inning with a single, Jordan Betts deposited an 0-1 offering over the left field wall to cut the deficit to 5-2. The Spinners would pull no closer however as Josh Walker came out of the bullpen to retire the next nine Spinners before handing the ball off for the ninth inning. Ivan Hernandez pitched around a leadoff walk to Aneudis Peralta to hand the Spinners a tough loss to start their six-game road trip.
On a night when the Spinners had just five hits, Joseph Monge had the only multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double. Betts hit his team leading ninth home run of the season while Dubon extended his hitting streak to five games.
Kevin McAvoy started for the Spinners and was fantastic, throwing three scoreless while striking out five. Jerez (0-1, 9.00) was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk, striking out two in his lone inning of work. Garcia was charged with two runs in three innings of relief, though just one was earned. He allowed one hit while striking out three. Enfember Martinez pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning to close things out.
The loss dropped the Spinners to 4.5 games behind the Wild Card leading Brooklyn Cyclones. The Spinners look to get back on track Saturday evening when Jake Drehoff (1-4, 4.37) gets the ball for the 7:05 first pitch.
