Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Aberdeen, MD - The Aberdeen IronBirds triumphed 5-2 over the Lowell Spinners by a score of 5-2 in the first of a three game set. Aberdeen notched five runs over two innings and never relinquished the lead after the scoring outburst.

The first set of runs in the game came in the fourth for the IronBirds. Austin Anderson worked a leadoff walk and then he was promptly hit in off a Jamill Moquete RBI double. After Riley Palmer successfully secured a one out single, Tanner Murphy hit a ground ball that went off of Williams Jerez's that allowed Moquete to come home. Jerez then threw the deflected ball past the Lowell first baseman Francisco Tellez, and Riley Palmer darted home off of the wild pitch.

The IronBirds then tacked on another two runs in the fifth when Jay Gonzalez safely made it to first off of an error from Lowell short stop Mauricio Dubon. Steve Wilkerson followed Gonzalez and hit an RBI triple to drive home Gonzalez. With Wilkerson standing on third, Austin Anderson cracked an RBI double that cleared the way for Wilkerson to trot his way on home.

Lowell would not record a run until late in the game during the sixth inning. After a leadoff single from Dubon, Jordan Betts crushed a two-shot homer to center field that put the Spinners right back in the game at 5-2. However that Betts homerun was the last score of the game as neither team was able to advance a base runner to second base for the remainder of the contest.

IronBirds' starter John Means tallied his first professional win. He pitched five innings, giving up five hits, two runs that were both earned, and one walk against five strikeouts. Ivan Hernandez earned his fourth save of the season when he came in the game in the top of the ninth. Hernandez recorded one walk and two strikeouts in his brief appearance.

The IronBirds will look to take the series against the Spinners in the middle game tomorrow night. Stephen Tarpley (2-4, 4.56 ERA) will get the starting nod on the mound for the IronBirds as first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
