State College Spikes News Release
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Brylie Ware put the State College Spikes out in front with an RBI double in the second inning, but the Mahoning Valley Scrappers took it from there and ended up victors by the score of 10-3 on Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Ware's double brought in Dariel Gomez with State College's (30-30) first run, giving him his 17th run batted in this season.
However, Spikes starter Michael YaSenka (1-1) left after walking the first two batters he faced in the third for an unknown reason, and both runners came in to score on George Valera's triple.
The game stayed tight through the middle innings, with State College turned away in the sixth after loading the bases and again held off the board after putting runners on first and second with no outs in the eighth.
Mahoning Valley (28-31) steadily built its lead in the meantime, with an errant throw on a steal of third enabling Korey Holland to score in the seventh and a balk bringing in Bryan Lavastida in the eighth.
The Scrappers then put the game out of reach with a six-run ninth, the centerpiece of which was Michael Cooper's three-run triple. Julian Escobedo and Johnathan Rodriguez each singled in runs as well, with a State College error plating another marker.
State College scored a pair of runs on Terry Fuller's fielder's choice and a subsequent error in the ninth to close the scoring.
YaSenka allowed one hit and three walks while striking out two batters before leaving the mound in the loss. Cameron Dulle followed him and went 3 2/3 innings without being charged with a run, yielding three hits and striking out three batters along the way.
Matt Duce was the lone Spike with multiple hits in the game.
Carlos Vargas (4-4) earned the win after starting and giving up one run on two hits and three walks over five innings. Vargas struck out eight batters in the victorious effort.
The Spikes stayed within four games of Batavia for the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division lead with 16 remaining on the slate but dropped to 3 ?1/2 games out of the lead for the NYPL's lone Wild Card berth, now held by West Virginia.
Saturday, the Spikes welcome a new opponent to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park to complete their eight-game homestand as the Auburn Doubledays (Washington Nationals) head in to start a three-game series.
