State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Chase Raffield missed a game-tying home run by mere inches as the State College Spikes fell shy of completing their late rally in a 5-4 defeat at the hands of the Auburn Doubledays on Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
The Spikes' (38-26) magic number remains at five, with 12 games remaining on the New York-Penn League regular season schedule.
Raffield's eighth-inning fly ball bounced off the right-center field wall just six inches below its top, resulting in a double that scored one run to make it a 5-3 game. State College had runners on second and third with no outs after the near-homer, but saw a runner picked off third base before an RBI groundout from Collin Radack finished the scoring.
The Spikes also loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth on three straight singles, but Raffield's flyout to left ended the game.
Luis Cruz collected three hits for State College, while Radack went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Robelys Reyes also produced two hits, incluidng a double, while Nick Thompson knocked in a run with a fifth-inning groundout.
Starter Dewin Perez (5-2) took the loss for State College after allowing three runs, all in the first inning, on five total hits and three walks over five innings of work. Perez rebounded to yield just one hits and two walks over his final four innings, and struck out a total of four batters on the evening.
Bryan Langlois opened the scoring with an RBI double for Auburn (27-35) in the initial frame, while Matthew Page's bases-loaded two-run single in the first extended the lead. The Doubledays plated two insurance runs in the eighth on a pair of two-out walks and Cody Gunter's RBI single to go with an error on the play.
Doubledays starter James Bourque (2-5) snapped a streak of five straight losses as he earned the win. Bourque gave up two runs on six hits and four walks over five innings on the mound, striking out two in the process. Tyler Mapes (4) allowed four hits and filled the bases in the ninth, but ended up tossing 1 1/3 shutout innings for the save. Auburn's win snaps a six-game losing streak.
