Cyclones Fall 14-4 in Error Filled Night

With the all-star break over the Cyclones entered the final stretch of the 2014 season with a quick commuter game against the Staten Island Yankees. The Cyclones committed six errors and allowed 11 unearned runs during the game, both setting franchise records as the Cyclones went on to fall 14-4.

After a scoreless first inning, Brooklyn came up to bat in the top of the second and was able to jump on the board and give themselves a little bit of room. With one out, Tyler Moore put a charge into a pitch from Yankees starter Sean Carley, sending it over the wall in right center, over a leaping Austin Aune for his first professional home run. Two batters later, Pedro Perez reached on a throwing error by Carley, and would come around to score moments later after a double by Adrian Abreu.

The Yankees got right back in the game in the bottom of the third, stringing together a few hits to plate two runs and tie the game at two. Staten Island got things going with a one out walk to Nathan Mikolas. The next at-bat, Jose Javier hit a single, picking up the Baby Bombers' first hit of the game. A softly hit fly ball off the bat of Luis Torrens would drop down in right field and plate Mikolas. Ty McFarland came up to bat next, and hit a fly ball to right, and unfortunately for the Cyclones, Michael Bernal lost the ball in the lights and did not find it until it was in its descent. As a result, the ball would drop in for an RBI single and tie the game at two.

An inning later, the Yankees continued what they started in the third and drove in seven runs to take the lead and knock Brooklyn starter, Scarlyn Reyes out of the game. Austin Aune led the inning off with an infield single, and would later advance to second on a stolen base. After a walk to Chris Breen and strikeout, a single by Vicente Conde would plate Aune and give Staten Island a 3-2 lead. Following the hit, Michael Conforto was charged with a throwing error, advancing the runners an extra 90 feet. Nathan Mikolas would reach on a fielding error by Adrian Abreu, and that would be the last batter Reyes would face.

Mike Hepple entered the game with the bases loaded and the wheels began to fall off for Brooklyn, as Hepple was able to induce a ground ball that was a tailor made double play ball, but it ate up Tyler Moore to score another run and keep the bases loaded. Consecutive hits following the error would plate another 5 runs and by the end of the fourth 7 runs came across in the inning, and Brooklyn found themselves in a 9-2 hole.

In the top of the fifth, the Cyclones had a shot to cut down on the Staten Island lead; after leadoff back-to-back singles from Perez and Abreu, and then a walk by Michael Conforto, the Cyclones had the bases loaded with two outs. Jhoan Ureña would not be able to come through for Brooklyn after being called out on strikes.

In the bottom half of the inning, Staten Island tacked on another 5 runs to extend their lead to 12 runs.

Brooklyn would only get one runs across the rest of the game and would go on to fall 14-4.

Fortunately for the Cyclones, the Lowell Spinners, walked-off against the Connecticut Tigers, keeping Brooklyn atop the wild card race.

The Cyclone will face the Yankees once again on Thursday night. It will be the final Jersday Thursday at MCU Park, and with tickets just starting at $10, there's no reason to not be in attendance.
