Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
Lowell, MA - The Lowell Spinners (31-32) defeated the Connecticut Tigers (34-30) by the score of 5-4 Wednesday night at LeLachuer Park. Trailing 4-3, the Spinners rallied to score two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Tigers. RF Mike Meyers (1-4) was 0-for-3 going into the ninth inning. With the winning run on at second base, Meyers hit a two out walk-off RBI single into right field that scored 3B Jordan Betts (3-4).
RF Mike Gerber (2-3) lead the charge for the Tigers offense Wednesday night. Gerber collected two hits (double and triple) along with a three RBI performance. In the sixth inning the Tigers scored three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Gerber hit a two run triple to give him his second and third RBIs. Gerber now has 35 RBIs this season which is tied for third on the Tigers all time RBI list with former Connecticut Tiger OF Danry Vasquez who set the mark in 2012.
The pitching couldn't get enough run support to seal the win. The offense collected nine hits, but could only manage four runs scored. RHP Austin Pritcher started the game for Connecticut and pitched five strong innings as he allowed one run on six hits and struck out three. RHP Gabe Hemmer (BS, 2)(L, 2-1) suffered his second blown save of the season and his first professional loss. Hemmer entered the ninth inning with the one run lead and couldn't hold it. Hemmer pitched 0.2 innings while giving up two runs on three hits. The defense didn't help matters as they committed four errors. Two by SS Joey Pankake (2-4) and two by C Tim Remes (2-3).
In the series finale, Tigers RHP Fernando Perez (4-4, 4.11) is slated to face Spinners RHP Jeffrey Fernandez (0-1, 5.79). The pre-game show begins at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1310 WICH and cttigers.com
