Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

TROY, NY --- Ben McQuown went 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI, while Corey Miller tossed 4 2/3 scoreless innings as the Vermont Lake Monsters opened a two-game series at Tri-City with a 3-1 victory over the Stedler Division-leading ValleyCats on Wednesday night at Bruno Stadium.

McQuown gave the Lake Monsters a 1-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI single to score John Nogowski, who had just reached base on a one-out double. Then after reaching second base on an error, McQuown scored Vermont's second run in the fourth inning on a Jose Chavez RBI single to left field.

Miller, who entered the game with an 8.18 ERA in his first seven starts, allowed six hits with one walk and three strikeouts over a season-high 4 2/3 innings. He worked around five hits over the first three innings with an inning-ending double play in the second and a McQuown assist gunning down a runner at second base in the third. After Miller came out after allowing a leadoff walk and two-out single in the fifth inning, reliever Michael Fagan walked Jason Martin to load the bases before getting Derek Fisher to flyout to end the threat.

The ValleyCats did get a run in the sixth as Jordan Schwartz walked the first two batters he faced and struckout the next two batters before giving up an RBI single to Ariel Ovando cutting the Vermont lead to 2-1. Schwartz (1-1) got out of further damage with a flyout to end the inning and then tossed a 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn the win. The Lake Monsters got an insurance run in the eighth on a one-out Max Kuhn walk and Trent Gilbert RBI double for a 3-1 advantage.

Closer Koby Gauna gave up back-to-back singles in the ninth inning, but got a forceout at third base on a bunt attempt before another forceout and strikeout to earn his ninth save in nine opportunities this season. Robert Kahana (0-2) allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits and four strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings to take the loss for Tri-City (42-22), which continues to lead the Stedler Division by eight games over second-place Connecticut.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for Vermont (27-37), which has won five of its last seven road games after starting the season 7-17 on the road. The Lake Monsters also improved to 10-7 in the month of August after having gone just 10-19 in July.

Vermont will close out the two-game series at Tri-City at 7:00 pm on Thursday before the Lake Monsters return to historic Centennial Field this weekend for a three-game homestand against the Staten Island Friday (7:05), Saturday (6:05) and Sunday (5:05).
