
Pike Shuts Down IronBirds, Renegades Win 1-0

Aberdeen, Maryland (8/20/14)- The Hudson Valley Renegades topped the Aberdeen IronBirds 1-0 at Cal Ripken Stadium on Wednesday evening, improving to 42-22 this season. The win keeps them perfect against the IronBirds in 2014, making them 8-0 against their McNamara Division opponent. The Renegades entered the All-Star Break with the second best record in the entire New York-Penn League, and now expand their first place lead over Brooklyn to 6.5 games in the division.
In another dominant pitching performance, Hudson Valley saw their starter Chris Pike throw 6.2 innings of scoreless baseball in his 9 th start of the season. The righty struck out five batters and walked one in the outing, bringing his record to 3-1. Pike has surrendered just two runs in his last three starts and now boasts and 3.06 ERA on the campaign.
The Renegades had two relief pitchers follow in the footsteps of Chris Pike, teaming up for a nine-inning shutout in the first game of the series. Trevor Dunlap tossed 1.1 innings with no runs and a strikeout, while Edwin Fierro earned his first save with a scoreless bottom of the ninth.
Offensively, Hudson Valley posted nine hits and one run in the contest. Coty Blanchard led the way going 3-4 with two doubles and a run scored. He now has twelve hits in his last ten games and brings his batting average up ten points to .291. Casey Gillaspie tacked on two hits and finished 2-5 at the plate, while Wilmer Dominguez went 2-4. Hunter Lockwood and Braxton Lee each added a hit on the night, as five out of nine Hudson Valley batters had at least one hit in the game.
Notes: The Renegades currently sit in a three-way tie for most road victories this season with 19. Their 23-8 record at Dutchess Stadium is the best home record in the New York-Penn League. Out of all fourteen teams in the league, they are the only club with a sub-three earned run average (2.92).
Hudson Valley will play one more game with Aberdeen before three on the road against the Connecticut Tigers. They return home on Monday, August 25, to host the IronBirds at Dutchess Stadium.
