WILLIAMSPORT, PA - Cesar Valera collected three hits, including the two-run double in the eighth inning to give the State College Spikes the lead for good, as the Spikes rallied to defeat the Williamsport Crosscutters, 7-5, on Monday night at Historic Bowman Field.

Valera's 3-for-4 night followed a four-hit performance for the State College (8-6) shortstop in his last visit to Williamsport (7-6), giving him a .700 batting average in two games at Historic Bowman Field this year.

Luke Voit also produced three hits and reached base on a walk in the game for the Spikes, who got within a half-game of Jamestown for the Pinckney Division lead with the win. Bruce Caldwell added an RBI double in the eighth as part of a 2-for-3 evening in which he walked twice and scored a run.

Kevin Herget (2-0) earned the win in relief as the second man in a "piggyback" setup on the mound for State College. Herget tossed 3 1/3 innings and yielded just one run on three hits and a walk. The right-hander also hit one batter and struck out three. Jeff Rauh (1) picked up his first Spikes save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning in which he punched out two batters.

Williamsport reliever Chris Burgess (0-1) took the loss after allowing all three State College run in the eighth inning. Burgess gave up a total of three hits and walk in his single inning of work, striking out two.

The win made State College a perfect 8-0 when scoring six or more runs, and preserved their unbeaten mark when out-hitting the opposition. The Spikes led the Crosscutters in the hit column, 13-10.

Tuesday, the Spikes return home for just their fifth official home game of the season when they face Williamsport at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in the middle game of a three-game set. The 7:05 matchup will feature left-hander Ben O'Shea (2-0) on the mound for State College. The Crosscutters will hand the ball to right-hander Jon Prosinski (0-1).

Medlar Field at Lubrano Park will once again go to the dogs that evening as fans are invited to bring their favorite four-legged friends out to the Spikes' first "Bark in the Park" Night of the season, presented by Metzger Animal Hospital, NEWSRADIO 103 and the Centre Daily Times. Fans will be able to watch the game with their canine pal in the Outfield Bleachers as well as on the concourse. Fans are asked to bring one dog per person, and all dogs must be leashed or crated. Owners will also be asked to provide their dog's vaccination records and sign a liability waiver.

The first 500 dog owners at the park will also get a cool Spikes t-shirt presented by Metzger Animal Hospital on T-Shirt Tuesday, and 16 oz. Yuengling and Yuengling Light drafts will be available for just $2.50 during the Yuengling Happy Hour from 6-7 p.m.

After facing the Crosscutters at Historic Bowman Field on July 3, the Spikes will return to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for their first July 4 home game in three years when they take on the Muckdogs at 1:00 p.m. The Fourth of July fun will include a Spikes Patriotic Hat Giveaway, presented by Vision Creative Solutions, to the first 1,000 fans age 12 and under to begin the Mini-Majors Head to Toe Giveaway Series.
