Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Veloz homers, but IronBirds lose
IronBirds' third baseman Hector Veloz homered in the fourth inning of yesterday's game, but it was not enough as Aberdeen dropped the rubber match of their three game set with the Staten Island Yankees by a score of 6-2. Austin Urban got the start yesterday, and went 4.1 innings, allowed three hits, three runs (two earned), walking six and striking out one. David Richardson pitched 2.1 innings of near-perfect relief, giving up just one hit and one walk, striking out two. Andrew Benak was the winning pitcher for Staten Island, which improved to 6-6 on the season.
Next Stop: Dutchess Stadium
The IronBirds open a three game series with the Hudson Valley Renegades tonight at Dutchess Stadium in Wappingers Falls, New York. The Renegades lead the McNamara Division with a 10-4 record. They hold a 4.5 game lead over the IronBirds, who sit in a tie for third place with the Brooklyn Cyclones.
It's been a while...
Dutchess Stadium was where the IronBirds last beat the Renegades. In 14 matchups last season, Hudson Valley won 13 of them. The lone Aberdeen win came at Dutchess Stadium on June 18, 2012. The IronBirds are 60-79 all-time against the Renegades, including a 27-40 mark in games played in Wappingers Falls.
On the mound tonight...
IronBirds' LHP Steve Brault will get the start this evening. Last time out, Brault was phenomenal. In a game that ended up being shortened by rain, Brault went 5.2 innings, allowing just one hit, walking four and striking out four in a 3-0 Aberdeen win over the Brooklyn Cyclones. The lone hit that Brault allowed was an Anthony Chavez single that came with one out in the third inning. The Renegades will counter with RHP Austin Pruitt. Pruitt, in two previous games, has pitched a combined 9.0 innings, allowing just four hits, one walk, and four strikeouts.
Here come the Cyclones...again
After a brief three game road trip against Hudson Valley, the IronBirds will host the Brooklyn Cyclones to close out the first quarter of the schedule. The Cyclones will make their second, and final, visit to Aberdeen this summer for a three game series. In the New York-Penn League, teams play only divisional opponents the first quarter of the season. The first non-McNamara Division opponent the IronBirds will see are the Tri-City ValleyCats in Troy, New York. That series begins Sunday, July 7th.
