State College Spikes News Release

-SPIKES COMPLETE ROAD TRIP WITH SERIES OPENER VS. WILLIAMSPORT: The State College Spikes return to Central PA tonight to play their sixth straight road game and their first in a three-game set against the Williamsport Crosscutters. After tonight's game at Historic Bowman Field, the two teams will play at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Tuesday night before going back to Williamsport for the finale in the latest phase of the SawBuck Series. State College took two out of three from the Crosscutters in the season-opening series between the two teams. Williamsport leads the all-time series, 47-40, and has a 26-17 edge when at home.

-LAST GAME: The Spikes blew up for a team record-tying five runs in the ninth inning to take a 7-2 win from the Batavia Muckdogs on Sunday afternoon at Dwyer Stadium. State College matched a record set on August 8, 2011 against Jamestown. Steven Ramos delivered a two-run double to plate the tie-breaking runs, and three additional hits combined with two errors, a walk and a hit batsman to increase the Spikes' cushion. Cesar Valera collected a pair of hits, including a triple. Reliever Kyle Webb earned his first professional victory in relief for State College, logging 2 2/3 shutout innings and allowing just two hits and an intentional walk. Webb added three strikeouts in the effort.

-LUCAS, HERGET LEAD WAY ON MOUND FOR SPIKES TONIGHT: Right-hander Josh Lucas makes his debut with the Spikes today as he starts on the slab as the first man in a "piggyback" tandem. Lucas missed all of 2012 with Tommy John surgery, and returned at the beginning of 2013 with four starts at Single-A Peoria, then made a single rehab appearance with the GCL Cardinals before joining the Spikes. Righty Kevin Herget, the Cardinals' 39th-round draft choice out of Kean University in New Jersey, will follow Lucas in his third appearance of the year. It is officially, after his start was curtailed in Tuesday's supsended game.

-GUELLER GETS THE BALL FOR ‘CUTTERS: Right-hander Mitch Gueller makes his second start of the 2013 season against the Spikes tonight for Williamsport. Gueller made the start on Opening Night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, allowing two unearned runs on three hits and a walk while striking out three over five innings of work for the win. Last time out, Gueller yielded three runs, two earned, over five innings for the win at Jamestown. The Rochester, WA native was the Phillies' supplemental first-round draft choice in 2012.

-FOURTH-ROUND PICK KATZ OFF TO FINE START: Mason Katz, the Cardinals' fourth-round draft choice in 2013, joined the Spikes in Mahoning Valley and played his first three pro games in Batavia. The Harahan, LA native went 4-for-10 with two runs scored and a double in the series against the Muckdogs, and delivered a hit in his very first pro at-bat during the first game Saturday.

-SPIKE MARKS: Ronald Castillo still holds a nine-game hitting streak that tied for the longest in the NYPL...Castillo (.389) and Bosco (.340) are now 3rd and 8th in the NYPL batting race...Bosco's nine extra-base hits are second in the NYPL to Zach Green of Williamsport, and his .640 slugging percentage is third in the league behind Green and Dan Gulbransen of Tri-City...Perry's 1.65 ERA is tenth-best in the NYPL
