Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
ROUND ROCK, TX - The Sugar Land Space Cowboys (34-48, 1-6) limited the Round Rock Express (48-33, 4-3) to just five hits but were unable to score a run in a 2-0 shutout defeat on Tuesday night at Dell Diamond.
RHP Misael Tamarez (L, 0-4) spun a 1-2-3 first inning and made one of his few mistakes of the night in the second when he surrendered a solo home run to Blaine Crim, putting the Express up 1-0. The Space Cowboys' righty allowed his only other run in the fifth on a walk, a double and an RBI single from Matt Whatley, pushing Round Rock's lead to 2-0.
The Space Cowboys managed a base runner in the first, second, fourth and fifth but hit into a pair of double plays and were unable to put a man in scoring position against RHP Owen White (W, 1-0). César Salazar doubled to begin the sixth off RHP Edwar Colina (H, 1) and advanced to third on a groundout, but was stranded at third on back-to-back strikeouts.
In the bottom of the sixth, RHP Spencer Arrighetti came on for the Space Cowboys and tossed 3.0 scoreless frames of relief in his second Triple-A outing, giving up just a single in the seventh and a two-out walk in the eighth. The 23-year-old struck out four to keep the Space Cowboys within striking distance in the final three frames.
Sugar Land's best scoring opportunity of the night emerged in the top of the eighth. Salazar reached on a fielding error by Diosbel Arias and Marty Costes walked with two outs, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate, but RHP Spencer Howard (H, 3) struck out the next batter to leave both runners stranded.
Jon Singleton earned a one-out walk in the top of the ninth, yet again giving Sugar Land a chance with the tying run at the plate, however RHP Jonathan Hernandez (S, 2) got a lineout and a strikeout to complete the shutout of Sugar Land. It's just the fourth time this season Sugar Land has been held off the scoreboard and the third time they have been blanked by the Express.
The Space Cowboys continue their six-game series with the Express on Wednesday night at Dell Diamond. LHP Nick Allgeyer (3-2, 5.09) is set to start for the Space Cowboys opposite Round Rock RHP Seth Nordlin (NR) for a 7:05 pm first pitch. The game can be heard on ESPN 92.5 FM or online here and seen on MiLB.TV.
