Everett AquaSox News Release
VANCOUVER, British Columbia. - The Everett AquaSox (20-16, 47-27) managed just two hits and six total base runners in a 1-0 loss to the Vancouver Canadians (25-11, 42-32) Friday night at Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium.
Jandy Sena (0-1, 1.80 ERA) made his AquaSox debut by tossing five strong innings, allowing just three hits and a run while striking out six to suffer the tough-luck loss. Sena relieved starter Chris Sorce after a scheduled one inning of work.
Sena was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 23rd round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of Marion Military Institute (Ala.). Listed at 6-foot-6, 245 pounds, Sena made 13 appearances for the Peoria Mariners to begin his professional career, going 4-2 with a 4.01 ERA.
The Sox two hits came on a fifth-inning Steven Baron double and an infield single by Terry Serrano in the sixth. Serrano extends his hitting streak to 12 games.
The eventual game-winning run came across in the fifth when Nino Leyja singled to right, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on a Marcos Luis RBI-single. Manager Jose Moreno was ejected in the frame.
Perhaps the best scoring chance for the Frogs came in the ninth inning, when Kalian Sams lined out with runners on second and third to end the ballgame. Pedro Vidal (4-0, 2.92) earned the win as one of four C's pitchers contributing in the shutout.
Bennett Whitmore and Willy Kesler finished the game for the Sox with an inning of scoreless relief apiece. Kesler extends his streak of not allowing an earned run to 22.0 innings.
The teams are playing out the final three-game series of the regular season after both clinching a spot in the 2010 NWL playoffs. Vancouver will host game one of the Divisional Round on Monday in a best-of-three series, with Everett hosting games two and three. Game 2 is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7 at Everett Memorial Stadium. The winner advances to the Championship Round against the Eastern Division winner.
The second-to-last game of the season will kick off Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. as Eric Thomas (1-2, 4.75 ERA) gets the start for the AquaSox, who need to win the final two games to match the franchise record for wins set by the 1987 Everett Giants.
