Everett AquaSox News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - The Everett AquaSox (20-15, 47-26) scored six runs in the first inning en route to a 6-1 defeat of the Vancouver Canadians (24-11, 41-32) in game two of a doubleheader Thursday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.
The Sox end up splitting the twin bill after losing game one 3-2, and finish the 2010 regular-season home schedule with a record of 30-8. The Sox also take the series from Vancouver two games to one.
Anthony Fernandez (8-3, 2.59 ERA) moves into a tie for the NWL lead with his eighth victory, and joins Chris Sorce as the first AquaSox to claim eight wins since 2004. The left-hander pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out four.
The Sox came out on fire after the 30-minute break between games, sending 10 men to the plate and pounding out six hits, including five straight, in a six-run frame. Kevin Rivers knocked home the first with a one-out double, followed by a hit batter to put runners at first and second.
That's when the hit parade began, with five AquaSox in a row recording base hits to drive in five more runs. Jimmy Jacquot, Fred Bello and Dwight Britton had run-scoring singles while Anthony Phillips drove in two with a double to center.
Fernandez, recently named to the 2010 NWL All-Star team, shut down the C's through six and has now allowed just two earned runs in his last four combined outings (23 innings).
Kalian Sams (2-for-3), Britton (2-for-3) and Phillips (two RBI) led the way for the Sox, while Jorden Merry allowed a solo homer to A.J. Kirby-Jones in the seventh but finished the job in one inning of relief.
Ryan Quigley (3-3, 7.83 ERA) lasted just 0.1 innings in the loss for the Canadians.
The Sox finish up the regular season with three games in Vancouver beginning tomorrow night at 7:05 at Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium. Game 1 of the Divisional Playoffs is set for Monday, Sept. 6 at Vancouver before the Sox return home to host Game 2 on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 7:05 p.m. at Everett Memorial Stadium. If necessary, Game 3 will be held Wednesday night at 7:05 in Everett as well.
