Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox dropped their second consecutive game to the Memphis Redbirds by a score of 16-7 in front of 3,076 fans at Security Service Field.
The first two games of the series have followed a similar script as the Redbirds jumped out to a big lead early en rout to victory. Tyler Greene started the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning, the first of two solo shots for him on the night. A Pete Kozma RBI single in the second would increase the Memphis lead to 2-0.
A wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Jordan Pacheco would bring the Sox even at 2-2 in the bottom of the second but Greene would strike again with his second home run in the third as Memphis reclaimed the lead for good. The Redbirds would score three more runs in the third on a Kozma two RBI single and a run scoring hit by pitcher Adam Ottavino to take a 6-2 lead.
Sox starter Joey Williamson (0-1, 11.57), struggled in his first start at the Triple-A level allowing six runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings. However the Sky Sox defense provided little help committing two key errors on the night, leading to ten unearned runs behind the Sox bullpen. A four-run fifth and a six run ninth were keyed by errors by first baseman Jason Giambi and shortstop Ryan Rohlinger respectively.
The Sox offense was provided by two key newcomers in Jorge Cantu and Jesus Merchan. Cantu hit his first home run of the year while Merchan finished 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Greene would finish the night 4-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBI while Kozma finished 2-for-3 with four RBI. The 24 hits for Memphis were a season-high.
Memphis starter Adam Ottavino (4-8, 5.43) picked up the win allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits in 5.2 innings.
The Sox will look to return to their winning ways Tuesday as former Memphis pitcher Clayton Mortensen (1-6, 10.55) takes the mound against Maikel Cleto (2-2, 4.26). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM MT.
