Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Colorado Rockies announced this morning that infielder Jason Giambi is scheduled to begin a rehabilitation assignment with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox today, Monday, August 8 as the Sky Sox take on the Memphis Redbirds in a 7:05 PM start at Security Service Field. He is scheduled to be with the team through the rest of the current home stand that ends on Wednesday, August 10th. Tickets for Tuesday, August 9 are almost sold out as grass berm seating is all that is left at this time but there are good quality seats still available for tonight's game and Wednesday's game.
Giambi, 40, has been on the disabled list since July 27 with a strained left quadriceps and will be making his first appearance in a game since being placed on the disabled list. Before the injury, Giambi was hitting .260 (25-for-96) with 10 home runs, 24 RBI and 16 runs scored in 48 games with the Rockies.
This will be Giambi's second stint in a Sky Sox uniform as he previous played for Colorado Springs in 2009 after the Rockies signed him as a minor league free agent in August of that year. In six games, Giambi hit .444 (8-for-18) with two homers, four RBI and four runs scored before the Rockies purchased his contract and called him up when rosters expanded on September 1.
In his career, Giambi has established himself as one of the premier power hitters in the game. The 2000 American League MVP has hit 425 Major League home runs while playing with the A's, Yankees and Rockies from 1995-2011.
