Mitchell, Dickson Named Players Of The Week
Published on August 8, 2011 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Russ Mitchell of the Albuquerque Isotopes and Brandon Dickson of the Memphis Redbirds have been named Pacific Coast League Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of August 1-7, the league office announced today.
Mitchell batted .467 with three doubles, a triple, three home runs and 13 runs batted in over seven games for Albuquerque last week. The corner infielder was among the top-five in several offensive categories, including first in extra-base hits (7) and RBI (13), second in total bases (28), tied for third in hits (14) and runs (9), fourth in OPS (1.463), and fifth in batting average (.467).
While Mitchell had multiple hits in five of his seven games, the right-handed slugger hit home runs in back-to-back innings on August 6th against Tacoma, helping him drive in a season-high six runs and collect three hits in the Isotopes' 20-7 victory.
Mitchell, 26, is batting .367 (33-for-90) with a .472 OBP since the All-Star break, hitting seven home runs and driving in 27 over the 25-game stretch. The Georgia native had seven homers and 29 RBI over 167 at-bats in 49 games prior to the mid-season break.
Dickson turned in a pair of quality outings last week, going 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA and seven strikeouts against two walks in the two starts. In his first outing, the right-hander held the Iowa Cubs to one run on three hits and one walk over seven innings, keeping the Redbirds in a close game that eventually fell in the favor of Memphis by a tally of 2-1. On August 7th at Colorado Springs, Dickson surrendered two runs over eight innings, picking up his fifth win of the season and first since June 27th.
Dickson, 26, is in his second season with Memphis after spending all of 2010 with the Redbirds, making 27 starts. On July 2nd of this season, the Alabama native made his Major League debut, throwing 1.2 innings for the St. Louis Cardinals at Tampa Bay. Dickson made his second career Major League appearance on July 6th against division rival Cincinnati before returning to Memphis. Dickson has made 21 starts for the Redbirds in 2011, striking out 98 and walking 29 in 133.2 innings.
Coincidentally, this is not the first time Mitchell and Dickson have won the PCL Player of the Week awards during the same time period as the two earned their respective honors for the week of August 23-29 in 2010.
