EL SEGUNDO - The South Bay Lakers fell to the Mexico City Capitanes by a 118-07 final tally Friday evening at UCLA Health Training Center, bringing their NBA G League regular season record to 18-15. Bryce Hamilton paced South Bay in scoring with 35. Ethan Thompson led the way for Mexico City (18-15) with 27.
The Lakers got off to a slow start, digging themselves an early 11-point deficit in the first frame. South Bay continued to struggle for most of the quarter. Bryce Hamilton and Joirdon Nicholas led the Lakers with six in the period, the Lakers trailed 17-35 after one.
The second quarter followed a similar pattern to the first, with South Bay still struggling to find any sort of rhythm. Capitanes forward Malique Lewis led the way at the half with 14 points and eight rebounds. Hamilton scored 12 in the half for the Lakers, who trailed by at the break, 38-56.
South Bay came out with energy and intensity to start the second half, stringing together some stops and converting on the offensive end. A 10-0 Laker run cut the deficit down to 10 with two minutes remaining in the quarter. South Bay trailed 77-89 going into final frame. The Lakers continued to battle all the way through the final quarter, refusing to let go of the rope. The deficit was cut to single digits briefly, but the hole proved was too big to dig out of as South Bay eventually fell, 118-107.
