Santa Cruz Warriors News Release
PORTLAND, OR - The Santa Cruz Warriors (19-14) outlasted the Rip City Remix (18-15), 131-124, on Friday evening at Chiles Center.
Guard Kendric Davis, forward Javan Johnson, and two-way guard Pat Spencer led Santa Cruz with 21 points each, and Davis added nine rebounds and 10 assists. Guard Donovan Williams followed closely with 19 points and five assists, and two-way center Usman Garuba notched 13 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.
Forward Alex Reese led both teams in scoring with 23 points off the bench. Forward Kevin Knox II notched 21 points and 11 rebounds, and guard D'Moi Hodge added 18 points and six rebounds. Two-way guard Ashton Hagans rounded out the offensive effort for the Remix with 14 points and 14 assists.
Santa Cruz came out strong as Johnson scored eight quick points to open the contest with a 11-4 Warriors lead. However, the Remix responded with a 14-4 run of their own to take an 18-16 advantage. The Sea Dubs briefly tied the game at 22 points before the home side rebuilt their lead, draining a three-pointer in the final seconds to close the frame ahead 34-28. The Remix remained in control to start the second quarter, extending their lead to as many as 11 points before a 12-2 run from Santa Cruz closed the gap to trail 53-52. The Warriors continued to battle in the final minute, and a Garuba free throw gave the Warriors a one-point advantage to end the half with a 60-59 advantage.
The Warriors outscored the Remix 21-5 to move ahead by 17 points and start the third quarter with an 81-64 lead. Eight straight points from Hodge brought the Remix offense back to life, closing their deficit to 95-89 before the Sea Dubs regained their advantage to end the third frame with a 102-91 lead. Two three-pointers from Davis early in the final frame pushed the Warriors advantage to 108-91. Rip City narrowed the gap to trail 120-118 with less than two minutes left in the contest, but five straight points from Davis prevented a Remix comeback and gave the Warriors a 131-124 road win.
