South Bay Drops Third Straight in Loss to Memphis

SOUTHAVEN, MS - The South Bay Lakers lost their third consecutive game as they fell to the Memphis Hustle, 141-118, on Friday night. Ivica Zubac led the Lakers (28-21) with 24 points, while Scott Machado picked up his 15th double-double of the season, but Memphis shot 60.0 percent from the field and made 23 three pointers in a game that they controlled from the start. Omari Johnson led Memphis (21-28) with 26 points as one of seven players to reach double figures for the Hustle.

Memphis started the game on fire, as they shot 62.5 percent from the field in the first quarter, to take a 36-23 lead into the second. J.J. Frazier and Dusty Hannahs combined for 18 points in the opening period, while Robert Heyer paced South Bay with seven early points. The Hustle's lead ballooned to as many as 32 points in the second period, but the Lakers were able to cut the deficit to 20, 72-52, going into the half. Memphis shot 11-20 from beyond the arc in the first half to fuel their big lead.

Memphis kept it rolling in the second half, as they went into the third quarter with a 109-81 lead. Myke Henry scored 12 points in the third for Memphis, while Machado and Zubac combined for 12 points in the frame for South Bay. Zubac scored 12 points in the fourth, but by then it was too late and the Hustle had secured the victory.

Johnson's game-high 26 points led the Hustle as Frazier (23 points), Henry (23 points) and Shaquille Thomas (20 points) all scored 20-plus for Memphis. Hannahs scored 18 points as Chance Comanche and Jeremy Morgan scored 12 points apiece in the win.

Despite the loss, South Bay saw productive play from Zubac (24 points, eight rebounds), Machado (15 points, 11 assists, three steals) and V.J. Beachem (17 points, six rebounds). Thomas Bryant scored 14 points for the second unit and Demarcus Holland added 10 points of his own off the bench.

The South Bay Lakers will finish the regular season tomorrow night when the visit the Austin Spurs at 5:00 from the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.
