FRISCO, TX - The Texas Legends (28-21) clinched a playoff spot earlier this week before hosting the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (29-20) Friday night in the final matchup of the two teams. Jameel Warney finished the night with 31 points, but the Vipers got the best of Texas 115-104.
The Vipers got a hot start, going up by 11 early in the first, but Texas responded with eight unanswered points and pulled within six at the break. Warney powered out 10 points in the second (4-of-5) to put Texas back in the driver's seat before RGV found an answer. The visitors matched every point and the two teams went into the locker room 64-58, Vipers.
Warney matched his second quarter production in the third, but Rockets two-way player RJ Hunter added 10 points of his own to lead the Vipers as they stretched the lead three points farther. Facing a nine-point deficit to start the fourth, Texas was unable to close the gap as the Vipers answered every attempt. Shooting 55% to Texas' 44%, RGV wrapped up the season series on top, 3-1.
Warney came off the bench to shoot 3-of-6 outside and 13-of-20 overall while adding 9 boards, 2 assists, and 2 blocks in 34 minutes. JJ Avila led the team in rebounds (10) and assists (6) and added 9 points, 2 blocks. Brandon Ashley (20 points, 2 rebounds), Jordan Downing (15 points, 2 rebounds), and Cory Jefferson (12 points, 4 rebounds) rounded off the double-digit scoring and Duke Mondy matched Avila's team-high 6 assists while grabbing 4 boards.
Hunter led the Vipers with 27 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists while Darius Morris neared a triple-double with 15 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists.
Texas finishes off the regular season hosting the Memphis Hustle Saturday night at 7:30pm. Playoff schedules and seeding will be announced following all Saturday night matchups. For more information, visit www.TexLegends.com.a--
